A few things make The Pavilion a great hotel: the location, staff, and the garden/pool area. However, it is really just an average (maybe even poor rating) hotel based on the price, overall look and cleanliness of the room and bathroom (including shower drains and toilets that clogged, towels that felt worn), and sleep quality including uncomfortable, lumpy beds.
So the great things first. The location of the hotel is excellent as you are near great restaurants, bars, shops, and in short walking distance to the Grand Palace and the riverfront! This is one of the best things about The Pavilion. There is a speakeasy right around the corner with great cocktails and some lovely shops with handmade, local crafts. There are also always tuk-tuks right outside the front gate, and I recommend taking a tuk-tuk to places like the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum S21 and the Russian and Central Markets.
The staff was also very helpful, polite, and professional. From the moment I sent an email to inquiry about availability to arriving and checking-in, the staff was polite and helpful. My email was responded to quickly and booking the room was easy online. The only down side to the staff was that when I asked about cars picking us up at the airport to bring us to the hotel, I was told it was $20.00USD in a vintage jag. I was not told we could just have a regular car get us for $12.00, which would have been fine with us. This is what we did when we were leaving. I like being told options up front and not just given the most expensive option.
The pool and garden area, where the restaurant is located, is nice, but know it will be hot. Phnom Penh is HOT! I know April and May are the hottest months, but it was still around 90-95 in July. I knew this going, but it is really HOT (and I am from Tampa, FL where it is also HOT in the summer!) So being by the pool and garden does provide shade, but there was not much of a breeze. They do have some fans, but it is still rather warm even though it is beautifully landscaped.
Even though the location, staff, and pool/garden are great, the rooms (I stayed in both 14 and 16. Stay in 14 with a private pool), are a bit shabby. Everything looked like it could be a bit cleaner and definitely the floors needed a better moping or sweeping. The beds felt old with lumps and springs in uncomfortable places. This made it my worst sleep in two weeks between Cambodia and Thailand. Further, our shower drain clogged one night in one room, and the toilet clogged in the other room. I know this can happen, and it is not the end of the world, but it just seemed as if the plumbing is a bit old or in poor condition. I realize it is Phnom Penh and not Paris or Seoul, but I have traveled throughout SouthEast Asia and West Africa before so drains and plumbing can be fixed. Further the towels were old and worn. Again, I understand where I am, but I stayed at a B&B in Siem Reap that had much higher quality towels that did not appear bear thread. My last note about the rooms it that they are a bit warm. There is a ceiling fan and air conditioner, both of which you need to run to cool off because it is HOT outside!
I would definitely recommend that if you stay here get a room with a private pool. It is a great way to cool off and also rather romantic! However, I am not sure I would recommend staying here. I am torn because it is a great location, but there may be better choices in the city.
