“For Art Deco Lovers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

The Central Market in Phnom Penh is a typical Asian market in respect to the goods offered for sale. However, architecturally, it is unique and quite spectacular. It was constructed in 1937 by the French, with a soaring central dome, flanked by four large wings. Under the dome there is a vintage clock. The approaches to each of four entrances have recently been enhanced by covered walkways in a complimentary style.

“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

Had a great day shopping here and bartering with the stall owners - got some beautiful silver bangles and lots of other stuff.
Everyone was friendly and we felt we always paid a fair price for our items - def reccomend visiting at the end of your trip so you dont have to carry around all the goodies you buy there :-)

“One of the better organised markets i have been to”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

Great market, organised arms spread out with a variety of products. Not all are cheap tourist gear, but fantastic dresses, lovely pants and shoes. You'll find everything you'd expect including trays of fried beetles and bugs for a quick snack.

“Fascinating over touristy place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

It's a fascinating market. The building itself is very French, and reminds me a bit of the central railway station in New York especially with the clock in the middle of the room. There are so many shop stalls it's great for those looking for some souvenirs, but not much bargain to be had, as it seems most of the souvenirs are mostly fixed priced whether you buy it from a market or from a shop front.
You can bargain a little but Cambodians are generally ok at giving you a fair price.
Unfortunately you'll find that many shops just end up selling the same things, like any other touristy market.
What's interesting though, is part of this market is also a wet market for the locals, so from one end you'll be looking at clothing and jewellery and suddenly you'll be confronted with fish heads and chicken bones! I thought that aspect of it was quite exciting.
Annoying tuk tuk drivers around the markets though, but then again that's like anywere else isn't it?

“Less claustrophobic than Russian Market”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

This is a short walk from the modern Sorya shoppng centre. The locals use it for their daily needs, but the souvenir stalls are a bit tacky. Flower area around the outside is amazing.
