The Amanjaya hotel is located right on the banks of the Mekong river and right in the centre of it all. There is a lovely temple over the road and it is a great place to sit on the balcony and watch Phnom Penh go by.
Most attractions are within walking distance, we never felt like we needed to get a taxi. The roal palace is five minutes away and the Independance monument is about 15-20 minutes walk where it was great to walk around the lawned area with the locals exercising in the evening.
The room we had was really nice with a large bed, sitting area, large TV, Balcony and very nice sized bathroom.
One of the best things is the breakfast served in the restaurant next door, it was impossible to finish it all and makes a very good start to the day. The hot chocolarte was really rich and strong (watch out for the sugar high).
The staff were very freindly and helpful when our luggage didn't arrive with us, they contacted the airport on our behalf and arranged for it to be delivered to the hotel the next day.

Having read the lonely planet guide to Cambodia Phnom Penh was on our must do list as somewhere we wanted to go to in order to explore the recent history of the country, and we knew that some of our experiences there visiting the 'killing fields' and 'S21' were going to be traumatic. There were also some reservations as to the safety of the city from other travellers reviews. We decided that our two nights here would ideally be in a central, safe position but would allow us to have an insight into the real Phomn Penh and it's chaotic infrastructure. Having researched Trip Advisor for the ideal Hotel, I was definately not disappointed. The Amanjaya was in the perfect position for experiencing everything! Adjacent to the river and with the palace in view, its position in front of one of Phnom Penh's busiest junctions was fascinating! An array of cars, motor bikes, street vendors, elephants, stray dogs, tuk tuk's and the odd open top truck carrying an assortment of cargo, it was, without doubt, one of the most absorbing street watching positions to be in. Our room was exceptional but the position of this hotel, particularly if you have a room with a balcony overlooking all this street chaos is fantastic. I have read some previous reviews of this hotel that say that the road outside at night is a bit noisy. I personally do not agree, it did not keep us awake at night yet was one of the highlights of our trip for street watching. It was also a very stylish 'boutique hotel' which was very comfortable and airy. Although this hotel is on the more expensive side I would personally pay this for it's position alone! I suppose it all depends what you are looking for!

We stayed here for one night because all of the lower priced hotels were booked. At $130 it was 4x what some other hotels with good reviews charged. Having said that, the rooms are beautiful, huge, and luxurious. I'm not sure I've ever had a nicer hotel room (though I must admit I am a budget traveler). The location could not have been better. Right on the river and only 2 blocks from the Royal Palace. The included breakfast was one of the best meals I had in 3 weeks in Asia and was by far the best breakfast. The staff was very friendly. Because I'd rather spend my money on sightseeing and shopping than on the hotel room, I'll probably try to find a different hotel next time. But maybe not, it was that nice.

My wife and I cannot say enough about Cambodia. The sights, culture, people, history, and food are amazing. I encourage you to visit if at all possible. We stayed at the Amanjaya and loved every minute of it. I understand the hotel is at the very high end price-wise, but we had no complaints. The room was VERY nice - all hardwood throughout, quite large, romantic setting, nice balcony, etc. The breakfast was outstanding. The location is perfect, within a short and safe walk to the National Museum and Royal Palace.

We spent a monthy travelling through through Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, staying in a wide range of hotels, and despite being told by a fellow traveller that he felt it was a bit tired I loved it.
It has a great location, right in the middle of town with balcony views along the river and towards the palaces.
Our room, (number 36 I think) was large and very comfortable, with polished wood floors and well decorated. Bath and shower. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful.
I hope to go back to Phnm Penh one day and will certainly stay at the Amanjaya again.
The city itself is good fun, loads of sightseeing from palaces to killing fields; plenty of good places to eat at low prices.
there are a lot of street children in Phnom Penh, some we saw were as young as 4 working as shoe shine boys. Also a fair few beggars, mainly land mine victims with limbs missing. I do wish that I could help them all. Don't avoid the country because of this, the people are not a problem, just trying to survive.
It has free internet.
