First impressions: This family-owned, multi-storied property looms over other buildings in the area, except perhaps the nearby mall. Averaging about 15 GBP pp per night, it is good value compared to its peers for its 3-star rating. Grade B+.
Pros: Excellent value for what you get. Rooms are spacious and clean. Some rooms have balconies facing the street below. The topmost floors offer views of the city. Sunset views from the rooftop's tiny pool is a big plus. Having free WiFi, A/C, in-suite safe, parking and a buffet breakfast doesn't hurt either. Staff service is very good, better than average.
Cons: Location is not its best feature. Although centrally located in the city, it is quite away from the POIs (Points of Interest) such as the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and the National Museum. It's a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute cyclo/tuk-tuk ride to get there. (Don't worry, the endless queues of tuk-tuks parked outside the hotel will happily divest you of your money, if you don't fix the price beforehand.) On the other hand, the Central Market, a money-exchange bank and a shopping mall is just next door. Some standard rooms have no windows, while the balcony views of nearby tenement rooftops are not really that appealing. The breakfast, though adequate, is not exceptional. The pool is nice, but is small and hard to find. Everything is a trade-off.
Verdict: Another nice, above-average choice for a hotel. Recommended for non-fussy, budget-conscious travellers who don't mind the trade-offs involved.
