“Disappointed, mainly by bathroom”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

We stayed in a regular queen room- #23. While I recognize this hotel offers relatively good value and a lovely courtyard with a pool, there were some serious flaws with our room.
A) It was very small and squashed, and the one window looked onto a brick wall.
B) Biggest issue was the bathroom where the shower had no drainage system so water intentionally spilled right onto bathroom floor. This is a serious design flaw meaning entire bathroom had soaking floor (of old shower water!) for duration of our stay.
They provide flip flops to use in the wet bathroom but the whole experience was still a little unpleasant.
A shame as the building itself is beautiful and the courtyard peaceful. Staff were also helpful although some have very limited English.
Would not recommend unless they fix the bathroom situation.

Room Tip: Room 23 is a regular queen with one window off bedroom onto a wall (no bathroom window). Quiet and d...

Sorry to hear that you were not happy with your stay. Your review is the first to have a negative overtone on our hotel so please allow me to reply. We take your comments onboard as I appreciate the time and effort you spent on reviewing the hotel. But please let me start by noting that we pride ourselves on providing a quality stay at an affordable price. You will see from previous various reports we even go so far as to iron the bed sheets when we make up the rooms. Why did not make a formal complaint at the time to the hotel staff if you felt that your stay was sub standard. I am will confirm a few pertinent points that very respectfully will contradict your comments -- It is simple each shower in the complex has a shower curtain and there is a very simple common practical process that is used globally when taking a shower all you do is to ensure that the shower curtain is on the inside of the shower grid at time of shower. This ensures that the water will run back into the shower area and drain way as designed to do. The flip flops are supplied complementary to rest your feet after you have spent the day hiking and walking around the city – most guest use them exclusively while in the hotel. One of the great features of this hotel as attested by all of the previous review is the attentative service we try to provide as any complaint received is dealt with there an then. I will agree that we are lacking in the language barrier area but my staff tries to make this up with good Cambodian smiles and friendliness. Our staff are learning English daily however the managers are all fluent in English so your complaint on any issue in the hotel would have been attended too with haste. We have had long term guest stay in this particular room for 2-3 weeks already so I am very saddened and disappointed your stay was not enjoyable. We are extending and undergoing a renovation in August this year and if and when you make it back to Cambodia please advise the hotel and we will happily entertain you with 3 nights of free accommodation as an indication of our willingness to please all of our guest.
Please come back and give us another go.Kind regards from Hilary (hotel owner)

Wonderful hotel, so pretty and the lovely attention to detail, the flower petals on my towels for example. Lovely pool area. Great staff, excellent breakfast. Nice beds,
Can't fault it really, just needed a couple of shelves in the bathroom. I even caught the cleaner ironing the sheets on the bed !!!! The safe in the room took some mastering , a more complicated one I have yet to find, but that's just nit picking , would definately recommend . Lovely The rooms are small but it is a boutique hotel so that was expected.

Room Tip: Dont get the one near the breakfast area as the staff start early and could wake you.

I had a really pleasant stay at Hilary's on a recent business trip to Phnom Penh. Any minor negative aspects are really due to my own personal preferences (see below) and not at all a reflection of poor service - I would definitely recommend this hotel to others!

Pros:
- Very find/friendly staff, quick to respond to any needs
- Very well-kept rooms with comfortable beds and clean/fresh linens and towels, reliable hot water, good wifi, and flat screen TVs (and clean, modern bathrooms)
- Food was decent (breakfast included - fresh fruits were fantastic)
- Small but very clean pool; great area to relax around, and usually pretty quiet
- Hotel is on a very quiet street and provides privacy from the street - and still very walkable to all things in the BKK area (food, massages, shops), including early morning jogs to the Independent Monument and riverside.
- In-room massages!

Cons (nothing too terrible, but could be points to consider for other travelers):
- Both rooms I had were were quite small, fine enough for me, but if traveling with someone else, I think could be quite crowded (but guessing other rooms might be bigger)
- My first room was windowless - next time, I will request a window and a balcony, and on the top floor
- Did not always have a desk to work at (I requested one for my first room and got a small one but my second room did not have one at all) - since I was traveling on business, desk space is very important to me for working in the evenings
- I have had better coffee in other hotels; would also love it if they had other healthier breakfast options like yogurts/muesli/granola or fruit smoothies instead of only eggs or rice
- Bathroom shower did not always drain well but when I asked for assistance, they were prompt to fix the situation
- Laundry is very expensive! Other boutique hotels in Phnom Penh include free laundry with the room and I was surprised how much they charged.

Overall, however, I really enjoyed my experience and would definitely stay here again, but I would know now what types of things to request. Thank you Hilary's for a great experience!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window because not all of them have one. Upstairs is probably quieter too.

This hotel is a lovely surprise when you walk through the gate. The pool area and bar are well appointed with the high walls and set-back position making it a quiet place to sit and enjoy a drink. It's in the centre of all of the city sights, this means quite a walk or an easy, inexpensive remork ride to most things.
The breakfast fruit platter was great, otherwise breakfast was pretty standard. If you fee like a good coffee it's not a bad idea to walk out of the hotel, turn left and then take a right when you hit st. 63, there are little cafes on both sides of the roads that do a great cup.
This is a quiet hotel, which to be honest is perfect if you're the type that is likely enjoys a quiet-sit after some of the more harrowing sights around Phnom Penh.

Room Tip: The room we wound up in was room 20 (I think). This was tucked in behind the reception area and sadl...

Beautiful Hotel, extremely friendly staff. In the middle of the city, but tucked away on a side street. Sat around the pool and listened to the birds and geckos, not traffic. I will return to this hotel, it was amazing.

Room Tip: One piece of advise, request a safe in you room. We had a small safe and a lockable closet, but I do...

We stayed at the hotel for 7 days and it was an ideal place to wind down after a day's sightseeing. The room was bright and clean and the bed large and comfortable. All the staff were friendly and attentive and it was always a pleasure to return to the hotel. The breakfasts were very good and the meals excellent. There are always tuk tuks available outside with hotel staff in attendance. We would use this hotel again in the future

This is a really beautiful and charming hotel. The rooms are very clean and spacious.
You have a nice, warm shower and even a bath. It's a good place to relax in this big capital.
The staff and owner are very friendly. They can also help you to find your way in Phnom Penh or elsewhere in Cambodia.
We would recommend this hotel to everybody!
