“A good value hotel !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

You can stay at the Golden Gate hotel in street 278 for $15/night. The room is reasonable but not lavish. The ones on the front are best (the ones at the back are either dingy or have too much noise from Sihanouk Boulevard. All the hotels nearby (Golden Sun, Golden Tour Eiffel) are of a similiar price. This has become the backpacker area of Phnom Penh (since they filled in the lake). Lots of cheap and good restaurants in the area. Near enough to the centre of town and plenty of waiting tuk tuks to get you to wherever you want (don't forget that $3 for a Tuk Tuk is more than enough to get from one end of the town to the other ! $1 to the riverfront from the Golden Gate is reasonable - but you have to bargain !)

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking street 278 (the main entrance). If you're in the annex any room with an o...

This was our 4th visit here and each year we have bought different friends back with us. They all go away very happy and impressed with the standard and the service.
The rooms are clean, beds vary in hardness but I have always slept well. Breakfast is okay and the staff are always obliging.
Laundry is done for free so that was brilliant for us.
Location good as it isn't too far to walk or tuk tuk to places. At night, there are plenty of restaurants in walking distance and you feel quite safe in that area.
Would recommend it very much.

Room Tip: I prefer to choose a room that overlooks the street as I like looking at the activity below. The oth...

I used to live in PP, and left in 2000. Since then, I have gone back a few times, and always stayed at the Golden Gate. I opt for the larger rooms on the 6th floor, at $35/night. It's not budget travel, but nor is it refined.

In all, I have always been happy here. Comfortable but with no frills, friendly service, safe, great location, clean and very good value. I am sure that these days PP offers far more exotic places, but I don't know them (I have a hard time digesting the new PP anyway!).

It is now bang in the middle of a lot of tourist spots (B&Bs, restaurants, bars, other hotels, etc), whereas it used to be a quiet dirt street... Whether you consider this an improvement or not is up to you! (Still quiet at night, though.)

Room Tip: The larger $35/night on the 6th floor of the main building are definately good value for money.

I stayed here this week and have stayed here 3 - 4 times a year since 2004. It is a good choice for budget minded travellers, or for long stays by expats working in Phnom Penh who don't need to impress clients and colleagues.

I normally stay in the cheapest standard room which is USD15-20 per night. For this price you get a basically furnished, clean room with aircon and fan but no window. There is a free laundry service which is good if you are travelling in from the provinces after a long trip. The hot water to the shower can be unreliable in some rooms. The mattress is a bit hard but the rooms are normally quiet so quality of sleep is good. TV has the main satellite channels but reception is not so good. There is free wifi in the rooms and lobby area.

The hotel is within walking distance of many expat bars, cafes and restaurants. This is important since the breakfast is rather average, so you may want to try eating at Anise at the end of the street. The hotel is a short tuk-tuk ride (normally $2) to the riverfront where there are even more eating options. A taxi to the airport costs $10 or free if you book a Deluxe room.

The hotel website is at http://www.goldengatehotels.com/

Room Tip: There are two wings to the hotel. The rooms are nicer in the main wing on the north side of the str...

The Golden Gate is a mid-priced ($20/ night standard, $35/night deluxe) hotel away from the central PP tourist area around Sisowath, but in an area with many good restaurants and bars for the expats and travellers. Staff were helpful although I didn't ask for much. Breakfasts were adequate, but not great. I've stayed here a number of times and the standard rooms are fine, just not quite as well fitted as the deluxe.

Room Tip: I was on the 5th floor, street side but was not disturbed by early morning street noises. Lower floo...

We have stayed in Golden Gate last Saturday (ie 12 May 2012) for just a short trip. Knowing that we would not spend much time in Phnom Penh, we've booked a hotel which we "believe" can offer a comfortable, yet at an affordable price. However, this has turned out to be one of the worst hotel I have ever been.

First and foremost, the rooms were old and shabby as we got the older rooms of the hotel. If not mistaken, the newer rooms were only slightly cheaper by only USD 5 (could be wrong). On top of that, the washroom emits a foul smell, which is rather unbearable to us. But as we were on a budget trip, we accepted gracefully without much complains.

However, what pisses us off is that the receptionist has cheated us by selling us bus ticket for the trip from Phnom Penh to Siam Reap at USD 10 per person, which in fact it could only be purchased at less than USD 1 (More than 100% profit margin). The bus ride was horrible, and we took longer than it should be as the bus makes frequent stops to pick up. THANKS RECEPTIONIST FOR CHEATING!!!

I've stayed at the Golden Gate every January for the past 5 years, and I love it! The hotel offers an airconditioned shuttle bus to and from the airport, the reception staff are always friendly and helpful and the regular tuk-tuk drivers have formed friendships with myself and my fellow travellers that extend beyond the borders of our trips. It's a popular NGO hotel, so book early or you'll be fighting big groups for the best rooms, but it means that there's a cheerful vibe and you don't constantly see 'suspect' fellow guests to turn you off your (free and delicious) breakfast, if you know what I mean.
Street 278 is great for a first time traveller - peppered with eateries, low-key bars and souvenir shops, as well as one street back from the main road. Stock up on bottled water at the stand at the end of the road. Lucky Burger/Mart is within walking distance, as is Steve's Steakhouse, and if you don't plan on buying heaps, Sorya Mall. Reception staff have great English language skills and are happy to joke around too.
The rooms are cheap, and have recently started to be made-over - a well-needed modern change to decor etc. There's a sizeable bar fridge and kettle available in the room, and laundry is free -every day! Free safe available, and papers to read in the lobby every morning. Free Wi-Fi too. Nothing's too flashy - Golden Gate tends to cater towards the hard-working, always-out crowd, but there's TV, air-con and a desk available for the days you just need a break. Room service is ok, nothing special, nothing bad.
Golden Gate holds a special place in my heart. For the price and the service, you can't go past it. Just don't book the lobby room - you'll be up all night!

Room Tip: There's a big difference between deluxe rooms (shower/bath is seperate to rest of bathroom, it...
