“so so hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

I would rate this hotel as so so only based on the following factors;
room - quite old and smelly, could be due to the old carpert I guess
location - it is a bit far from the city center though still accessible by transport
food - not the best in town but still acceptable
in conclusion, not the best I have had in cambodia but given the price I paid, it is not that bad afterall

On first appearance the hotel looked nice and stands in a good position on the river. It is outside of the city centre with a pleasant walk along the river to the bars and restaurants. The reception area and dining room were of reasonable quality but the accommodation floors and bedrooms themselves were of extremely poor quality with tired decorations, ill fitting appliances and numerous cigarette burns to the vanity unit in the bathroom. The carpets in the corridors, which smelt of smoke, were threadbare and worn. This hotel rapidly needs to invest in a major refurbishment programme otherwise I can see it closing in the near future. The staff however were attentive and friendly.

I stayed here for four nights while I was on a business trip. The hotel is very grand from its street appearance. If staying here I advise you stay in one of the Mekong floor rooms - free wifi, free afternoon snacks and separate breakfast dining room. If you are a non-smoker make sure you request this in advance as there are only a handful of non-smoking rooms. If you cant handle smokers id recommend staying somewhere else as smoke creeps through the whole hotel. The rooms are very dated and need updating, but the views of the Mekong are great. Staff were fantastic and very helpful in every way. The plus was the Physique Health Club great standard gym for a 3.5 star hotel with your standard treadmills, bikes, weights and even PT sessions. All in all not a great hotel but fairly average for the price paid.

Room Tip: Get a room on level 5 facing the Mekong River

From the outside, it is a very beautiful hotel, but the facilities inside our room are a bit old. It may be because the age of the hotel as well. and it seem like it is not about to be maintained very soon. With the amount that we paid, we hope to receive a better room than the one that they offered us. There is no wifi for free access inside the room or around the hotel premises.
One excellent thing of the hotel is the Breakfast. we really enjoyed the breakfast and would recommend it to anyone who care about dinning.

Room Tip: You have to pay for wifi access in the room or outside

Reading other people's reviews of this hotel, one would expect a not too pleasant stay but I actually enjoyed it. We flew in from Ho Chi Minh City as part of a tour of Vietnam and Cambodia and the first striking think it the difference between the two countries. If one considers that Cambodia has only really had 10 years or so to rebuild after the Khmer Rouge and subsequent instability, one can see a really friendly population which is trying its hardest to re-establish itself - no wonder then that the Cambodiana hotel is a little bit run down.

On first arrival the exterior and lobby are very impressive and one can immediately see how this was once a very grand hotel. The rest sadly is all getting a bit tired and in need of refurbishment. The rooms had a comfortable bed but the furniture looked very 70's. There was also a slightly damp smell to it. Everything was functional though and it was clean. The view was over the river but in between was the hotel's maintenance area with oil tanks etc. Breakfast was not that good with limited choices - especially of cooked breakfast if you didn't want noodles of soup!

I was a bit disappointed that there was no free WiFi - in every other hotel we stayed in it was free at least in the lobby but I was told by the staff that I had to buy a drink or a pastry in the coffee shop to be given the wifi code!

The pool area was large and quite nice even though the one time we visited it there was a sudden deluge of rain! - it is the rainy season.

The position is good with a 10 mnute walk along the river to the bars and restaurants and a thriving night life. Transport is by tuctuc - not the indian style tuc tuc but basically a 4 seat trailer latched on behind a motorbike - great fun, cheap and usually friendly drivers - about 2-3 USD back to hotel.

So in summary the hotel was a bit dated and tired in desperate need for refurbishment. I find that easier to accept bearing in mind the country's history but I think the breakfast and small things like the wifi could be improved on. Yes I would stay again as I liked the atmosphere and the position.

Room Tip: The north wing doesn't look out on the maintenance area.

The view at the Mekong restaurant is amazing. But the guest rooms are really old and smell moldy. The elevators are extremely slow and old. The beds are too soft for us, not very comfy and the air con temperature can't be adjusted.

Location is ok, 15 min walk to the royal palace and the restaurants area.

Room Tip: Choose rooms near the pool, cos you could connect to the pool area wifi service free of charge, as t...

From the street this Hotel has that good old 'wow factor', you then walk up into the lobby where the experience continues, a friendly warm welcome on check in was genuinely delivered.
We got into the lift and went to the third floor, the lift doors open, and the experience changes. Common areas are tired, carpet joins are separating and the carpet has stretched to extent that it's gathering.
Our deluxe room was very tired and well overdue for a good renovation. There was stains on the carpet, the laminated headboards were cracked, and there was mould in the bathroom, the airconditioner didn't appear to be doing a great deal.
Our room had a glimpse of the river, but overlooked the maintenance yard of the hotel which meant it was a bit noisy.
At $140/night I expected a lot more.
There's only internet available in the bar and restaurant and computers were on our floor just outside the lift but this was not complimentary. I would expect a hotel of this calibre to offer free in room wifi.
The hotel is a bit of a walk from the main restaurants and bars, I would suggest staying up north of the Royal Palace.
