On a short visit to Phnom Penh we have a list of alluring good value restaurants a mile long to check out. This is a very pleasant dilemma. But our task it is made a degree more difficult when we stumble upon the Raffles in house restaurant Le Royal where Michelin hatted Chef Steve Van Remoortel rules the kitchen. The menu and prices look to good to be true, why should we venture out on such a stormy night when the offerings look so amazing within?
We begin with Sach Krorock A’eng a Cambodian homemade pork sausage with chive flowers which is tangy, tasty and definitely “moorish”. A locally produced terrine of “Soulard” Foie Gras follows which is heaven and could be our staple during our stay. But there is more. For mains we have a local stuffed crab, Kd’arm Trung Kroeung. Yikes this blending of local flavors is so good, it could become addictive. Finally, we are spoiled with a local interpretation of a Crepe Suzette. A little chopped local fresh fruit is the perfect flourish. And the perfect French wines to accompany our amazing repast? No wine taxes here. We are spoiled and enjoy a Chablais Domaine William Fevre, Chateau La Rousseliere from St Estephe and finally a Chateau Laulerie cotes de Montravel. This is Phnom Penh!
