“stay away”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

If we hadnt booked in advance and arrived quite late, we would walk away. Its overpriced, rooms not very clean and most of them have no windows (which is not really too clear when you are making the reservation). It is just ugly. There are much nicer places for less money round the corner.

Sary's is fine enough, if you were paying maybe $8-$12 a night. However, they are charging about $27 a night, and for that money, it's NOT WORTH IT. You can find much better.

Plus Sides:
-Internet works really well.
-Food is good.
-Staff is pleasant.
-Rooms are large.
-Shower is hot.

Downsides:
-AC does not cool down. The lowest it will go is 27 degrees celsius.
-The bathroom smells like sewage.
-Our room had windows that, although closed, were open to the outside air through large cracks (because the shutters were wooden).
-Cats were meowing and fighting all night outside our windows. Even ear plugs wouldn't help with the noise. I had to sleep in my headphones with music on to drown it out.
-Our bathroom was not clean when we arrived. The entire floor was covered in muddy footprints.
-There is no instant coffee or a phone available in the rooms. We have used both at our guesthouses.

So, all in all, it's fine enough if you can get a low price, but you can find better amenities for the price.

I came here alone one evening after work and I had a great experience. The manager and staff were very chatty and friendly and i stayed a lot longer than i anticipated. I ordered a fish fillet which was so delicious, fresh and hot! I didn't have to wait too long either. The fresh watermelon drink was divine too. Nice atmosphere with music, but not too loud. It was obvious that they have recently re-decorated as everything was very new and clean. There is a big screen too so it was ideal to watch the football! Would throughly recommend this place.

We booked Sary's Guesthouse by email the day before arriving and the owner confirmed but said he could not provide the free bus station pick-up offered on his website because "all the drivers are busy for Chinese New Year."
We said we would make our own way there but when we arrived found he told us he was full. He said he had taken another booking "because sometimes people don't turn up" and the other people got the room because they arrived before us.
He then said his tuk-tuk driver (apparently they weren't all that busy after all) would take us to his friend's hotel but they only had two rooms - a dingy one without windows and one with water leaking down the wall on to the floor. The tuk-tuk driver and the "friend" then found us one night at the excellent nearby Fancy Guesthouse.
We would have stayed but they were full the second night so the owner of Sary's offered to have us collected by tuk-tuk at 8.30 the following morning to return there.
It was a mistake. It was the first place we had stayed in nearly two months in Laos and Cambodia which did not provide complimentary water in the room and we had to request a toilet roll and soap. The toilet roll arrived, the soap didn't.
When we returned from a day out the owner - a former tuk-tuk driver who had clearly retained some of their less desirable marketing techniques - demanded to know if we were staying a second night or leaving as he'd had email inquiries for the room. Time to go.
The rooms are large, the bed was comfortable and, considering the number of bars in the area, the back room was quiet but the welcome and service leave a lot to be desired - even if your booking is honoured. Vastly overpriced at $25. You can do much better.

The owner had messed up our booking and wasn't that helpful in trying to sort it out. The room was tired and not very clean (the shower was still draining water from when it had last been used) and there was no toilet roll provided. There was a damp patch along most of the bedroom ceiling. The downstairs seating area was too noisy to sit in. The TV was playing loudly and was competing with music from the place next door.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel, you can get better for your money, at least someone who offers some customer service.

We booked a standard room but got upgraded to a room with a balcony. The room was clean, bed was comfortable and the shower (with hot water) worked well. The location is great by the riverside area and the Royal Palace is within walking distance. We had breakfast in the hotel (not included in the room price) but it was nothing special so I would recommend to go somewhere else where they have fresh bread to offer.

We booked a standard room for 2 nights. Turned out to be a room without window(s)! which we did not want. Was not mentioned on the website. Had an argument with the manager. Only other available room was with a balcony on the roadside (quite noisy) for $ 30= which we got for $ 27= after a hassle. No glasses, no bottled water and bathroom/toiletfan blows right into the room which is not so 'fresh' we think. Room was not cleaned after 1st night. location is good but the place is 'wearing down' already we think.

Room Tip: Standard rooms no window! Roadside rooms are noisy.
