“cannot recommend this place enough!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

this had to be the best welcome I received in cambodia!

Staff were very friendly and helpful, and the owners great fun and knowledgeable.

we tried to book for 2 nights but only one available, however on the 2nd day we were told that as one of the owners was out of town we could stay in his room for the night.

there was a great menu selection in the downstairs bar area which was good value for money.

we loved it so much we came back to stay again at the end of our trip and were offered room 5 which had been modernised to such a high standard that you wouldnt know it was a hostel - it was nicer than a lot of the hotels i stayed in

Great bar/restaurant downstairs and lively bar on the roof. what more could you want?!!

definitely my favourite place to stay in cambodia (along with the sister hostel in siem reap)

I absolutely love this place! When you walk in you're met by a host of warm, friendly, cool and capable staff. The atmosphere in the restaurant & bar match 100%. Great coffee & the restaurant provides full array of meals / drinks that were excellent! It was never too much to make variations to your liking as well, a spanner in the works most places but at the Mad Monkey they pull it off with panache!! The room - fantastic! Clean to the highest standard, with welcoming gardenia on bed - if it's the little things that make the difference one example of many! What's even more amazing about the Mad Monkey is the family atmosphere of the team here - everyone's hugely proud of where they work, what they do and the standard they achieve. The Mad Monkey has that very special feeling of a business that's going on to do incredibly special things!! Take some time to talk to the managers as well about the many things to they do to contribute to Cambodia, the commitment to training and development projects etc. You'll be very moved! The boat party just one example - an unbelievable day! Thank you to everyone for being who you are and just making the stay so incredible...

Rooms are nice really big King single beds and have good AC. The bathrooms are well cleaned and it has fantastic rooftop bar making it real easy to meet fellow backpackers. About a 2-3USD tuk tuk ride to main strip or 1USD moto. The hostel itself is a little expensive and the downstairs restaurant although fantastic is a bit expensive for Cambodian standards but if its within you budget its well worth the visit!!!

As a couple in Phnom Penh for the first time we booked the MM on hostel world and were so glad.
A couple of minor issues but nothing to stop us wanting to stay here.
First off all the complaints about room 4 where we stayed. No the room wasnt perfect but it wasnt as bad as the moaners are complaining about, we couldnt smell anything and certainly werent woken up by anything. On hostel world it does say they have cable tv but they dont in the rooms just on the roof top bar. but again not an issue.
Now for the wonderful parts.
1) the staff - especially the Means Tina and Orn so amazing so welcoming and so blimmin lovely you could just see how happy they were to work there and thats so nice to see. We have to say that all the guys that worked there were wonderful but the personalities of these guys just shon through. They kept making me amazing banana and vanilla ice cream milkshakes which were delicious
2) not much on this trip has made us think how we are proud to be English. Except for when we came here and read and found out about what the 2 English owners do in Cambodia. Not only do they hire under privilaged and disadvantaged guys to work here and start their learning process from scratch. They also help a wonderful charity and you can see that the staff want to be there!
3) the food was just delicious and definitely value for money considering there are many foods from home! We went to the bbq night on the rooftop bar and that was delish too!
4) the rooftop bar was good. The feel and atmosphere of the place was wonderful
5) the artwork in the hallways were brilliant and they were even advertising for more artists!
6) they helped us book our bus to Siem Reap and always had tuk tuk drivers outside
We went to the S-21 prison and the killing fields. A seriously trying and emotional day which made us realise just what these guys had been through! The driver stayed with us all day for £10.
For all you lot saying dont believe the hype. We just dont get it! You were either being extremely picky or were staying at a different place we were just gutted that Siem Reaps Mad Monkey were full!

Stay here what ever you do! And say hello to Tina and Orn for us!!

The staff make this place. They went over and above to make us feel welcome. Always chatty and helpful - whether arranging transport for us or recommending the best spots to eat. Food in the hostel was amazing and there was a nice atmosphere throughout. Rooms themselves ok. A must stay.

I stayed in the dorm of The Mad Monkey for 2 days. The dorms are lovely! each bed has its own plug and light and ours had a balcony. Other rooms were being done up and the bed wasn't too bad! The staff were great and helped me no matter how many questions i repeated, needed help on, they sorted my bus to Siem Reap and told me how to get to places. It was really lovely how they stretched the theme of 'monkey' throughout the whole hostel making it seem one big household rather than a hotel. I didn't have a padlock (needed!) but evenso this hostel gave a really safe feeling and others and I felt really safe and left are bags on our beds!

At the time of my visit the King had just died, so everything was basically closed. But even so the vibe was great and the hostel was in walking distance to just about anything! including the independence monument, S21, royal palace, national museum etc. The food is also amazing if like me you've lived off Asian food too long. If Asian food is still your thing though there are plenty of shops nearby and the night market was $2 dollars away!

I did find it a little hard to make friends there with other travellers as a lot of people tend to live there for a couple of months. This was good in a way as you stay with people that really know the city, but in another way you can't expect to make plans to go somewhere else, but that could happen anywhere i guess!

I did the quadbike tour, really recommend it for sight seeing the outer regions of Phnom phen:)

Overall the Mad Monkey is deffo worth a visit! and im sure if there wasn't a royal complication the bar would have been a lot more lively! (Siem Reap was booked out when i was there!)

Recommended!

:)

Room Tip: lie on the bed before you pick it! (some mattresses can be springed out!).
