“Urban calm.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2012 via mobile

An oasis amongst the hustle and bustle of the city. This urban resort an spa is a sister company of The Pavillion, which is an historical colonial building we had stayed in before (and loved). Both are located just down the road, not far from the Royal Palace. Unlike the traditional The Pavilion, The Plantation is of modern chic decor and has more rooms.

Rooms are decorated in minimalistic style, with the a touch of local flare, and those on the ground floor have a private garden area.

The quality of service is of a high standard as you can expect of most hotels in this price range in Cambodia. I loved the pool side restaurants and lounge areas the most.

Do take time for a stroll around the neighbourhood - as you will find some great boutiques stores within a few blocks - especially along Street 240 which has an eclectic mix of mixed local fashion retail, second hand book stores which stock a great range of historical books about the country, cafes, restaurants and arts and crafts. A good time to do this is in the late afternoon as the sun is not as hot, and before stores close around 7pm.

The hotel is well located, within easy walk to the center, restaurants etc. It is very modern too (so modern that parts of it still seem to be under construction, making for a bit of noise sometimes!)

My room was adequate. A few minor annoyances like the safe not working, the mosquito net above my bed being covered in dust, and the wifi not reaching my place (which next to running water and A/C is pretty much a must in this day and age). The room was also a considerable walk along a corridor too, then a flight of stairs, then another corridor.

Service was very friendly, and English was good. Things seem to take a while though, like check-in, or the taxi they ordered (which was rather late, making the trip to the plane a bit nerve wracking).

The designers seem to be going for a historical feel. This is imitation colonial rather than the real thing. It is quite a nice affect though. (Swimming pool and eating area, and lobby, have a nice ambiance).

Breakfast was pretty good, with plenty of different foods on offer. Prices at the bar are commensurate with a hotel in say Melbourne rather than South East Asia though (a fruit drink will set you back US$3.50).

I don't have any major complains and would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. At $US65 though, I wouldn't be raving.

We stayed at the Plantation in a pool view room for 4 nights/5 days in the middle of April during Khmer New Year - which might be one of the reasons for this rather negative review.

Positive sides:
- Location
- Very nice staff at restaurants and reception
- Hotel buildings/close surroundings
- Pool view rooms and balconies (1.st floor) are very nice

Negative sides:
VERY negative was that the pool was very dirty and had a huge growth of alga. If you were touching them for instance on the stairs to the cabanas, they would swim out in the pool as slimy green/brow "monsters". During our stay I only saw one cleaning of the pool (maybe the pool staff were on holidays) - hereby not said that this was the only - but if no action is taken the pool which actually could be very nice will have to close down. Then it can always be stated that we could just stay out of the pool, but it is rather difficult with 2 young children who are very attracted by the pool and furthermore PP was almost fully closed, so there was nothing much to do.
No shower at the pool side, so people just went into the pool with all their bacteria (and dirt) which might increase the growth of alga and not to say the invisible bacteria....
Despite it is a new hotel, the chair in the room was rather dirty/stained and the same apply to the chairs at the balcony
We had a late check out, and were in the restaurant with friends, and when we came up to take our last things at the room the cleaning staff had entered the room and had turn everything upside down, which was rather annoying as we still needed the room.
In the garden there was a severe problem with small insects (sandflies?) going into your food, eyes and other moistly areas.
The beds were rather hard.
Further the towels were very old and ragged in the initial part of our stay - just like the former review states - not that it is normally is important to me, but this was so significant that even my family - who never take any interests in such details - noticed.

The work going on constructing a new bar and pool only affected us one day, but might cause problems to others.

So all in all a very mixed stay - but it could have been so nice, as the people and the surroundings are great.

Room Tip: Go for pool views on the 1st floor which are very nice and airy. The ground floor rooms are covered...

I am very sorry we have disappointed you with the swimming pool. I have instructed the staff to be very cautious on chemicals. It is very easy to get rid of everything by just adding chlorine, which is not good for the health. We might step up a little as algae does not look good even if they are less harmful than chlorine. I am considering to change for salt treatment, which slows the development of most parasites. Cheers, Alexis (owner)

This place was great. An oasis away from the streets with a great pool area and decent food. The rooms were modern and spacious and the staff very helpful. It's probably a bit pricey but well worth it! Great time.

The accountant in me thinks you should always look at these things in terms of value for money, if I pay peanuts then I don't expect the best, but this hotel was not cheap, and really underdelivered. On the price, we had to have the hotel amend the room rate 3 times to stop them charging us a higher price than we had booked for (a technical problem, yeah right we have heard that before!).

The hotel was advertised as new, but this is clearly a refurbishment job that went wrong. As we were checking in we overheard a guest complaining about having to change rooms, and as we found when we went to our room, it was dirty and the bathroom flooded so we had to change rooms. The towels, not something I would normally care about, were disgusting, old, the sort that you get at a gym that have been used a zillion times and washed badly.

There was also a big problem with flies, overgrown vegetation, and general cleanliness. The staff were not friendly, and become visibly rude once we had complained about our room and had to be moved.

On the positives, the hotel was in a fairly good location, but with the abundance of cheap transportation I am not sure how much of a factor this plays in choosing a hotel in Phnom Penh.

The breakfast was OK, selection OK, but, you have to eat while dealing with the fly onslaught which is kind of irritating.

I am very sorry we did not meet your expectations. The Plantation is a brand new hotel, opened just four months ago. Indeed it is installed in buildings that date back to the twenties for some of them - but be sure the towels are a bit newer than that!

I am not sure the vegetation is overgrown - and we are planning to have it grow a lot more, with the help of our four dedicated gardeners. With a name like ours, please do not expect too much air conditioned common spaces (only the rooms and the restaurant are air-conditioned).

In our different projects, we are very committed to heritage conservation and the preservation of green spaces. I am very much aware that this is a choice that might not match with the needs of every one, but this is the path we have chosen as our development policy.

I hope some of you will like it.

Cheers,

Alexis

Wonderful hotel in the heart of the city. Very new and fairly contemporary. Really good art in the entrance, surrounding the fish pond. Room was well laid out and very tastfully decorated. As always in Cambodia the beds are huge and comfortable. Staff in reception were always rather formal, but around the pool (which is stunning) and in the restaurant especially they were very charming and made you feel at home. Do try out the spa, it's divine!
Would definitely stay here again.
