“Friendly, well-run guesthouse”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2011

This well run guesthouse has basic, small rooms but it has helpful staff who have been catering to travellers' needs for years which was a big plus for us. We paid 7 dollars for a double room which was clean, with a comfortable bed, although the bathroom was in a poor state of repair. The family gave clear advice about where to go and sorted out bus tickets etc. We had breakfast in their small terrace area and loved the relaxed atmosphere. It is not for you if you want all mod cons and nicely decorated, spacious, quiet rooms but if you want somewhere to crash at a budget price where you feel welcome & safe and where you can sort out logistics with experienced advice, then it is ideal.

Stayed 2 nights at TAT in a fan only double room for $8/night. Hardly hardy worth that price compared to all of the other budget guesthouses we've stayed in around SE Asia (Cambodia included!). On our first night we were told the upstairs restaurant was open until 10; went to eat after arriving at 8:45 and were greeted by the cook in her pajamas, who put up such a fuss to the other employees (presumably about having to cook still), that my girlfriend and I simply offered to leave and eat elsewhere (out of awkwardness and feeling completely unwelcome!).

The rooms were very basic, not the cleanest either. No views from the windows whatsoever, and TONS of dust on the furnishings. No hangers or hooks provided for towels/clothes; things get very wet as a result of the "Asian style" open-showers in the bathroom.

On our last night there we got ZERO sleep (and we are very heavy sleepers). The doors were being slammed all night, every 45 mins at least, from midnight right through to 6:00AM, at which point some of the staff began cleaning around our room without any consideration for sleeping guests (splashing buckets of water, banging around on doors and walls, etc.) I raised the issue with them and they were not helpful in the slightest except offering me a "new room" if we stayed longer - no thanks, we're outta here! $8/night can go a LOT further if you look elsewhere...

I stayed in Phnom Penh twice and both time in this guesthouse because it feels like going back home..

The room range is good : the cheapest room are 3 or 4 dollars (with fan and non attached bathroom) but i stayed in the 7 dollars room which have everything you can need : fan, bathroom with hot water, towels, bed sheets, TV etc..

When i left the first time i said that i probably will come back one week later and they said they could keep a room for me. When I arrived the 7 dollars room were all full but the gave me a bigger room for the same price and i found that really fair !

The staff is great, it's a family working together and everybody is really nice.
Nobody is pushing you for anything but if you asked them they could give you good advices (for exemple for the price for tuk tuk) or even book a bus for you for 5 dollars (a lot of guest house charge more to take a commission).

They also have a rooftop restaurant, computers, hamocks, couch. It's really easy to meet other travellers because of the rooftop and you can stay here for dinner or going outside (there is a lot of little restaurant) and they don't get "mad" at you if you go outside.

I'll really recommand this place to everybody who want to stay in Phnom Penh

The only bad point can be the location (a little bit far from the riverside or the palace but for 1 dollars or less you can have a tuk tuk to go there) and it can be a little bit noisy in the morning because of the work in progress in the next building but it is really not tat fault..

The guesthouse is located in a quiet neighbourhood, quite near to the Olympic Stadium.
The places of interest are within walking distance (about 1/2 hour walk).
The room might be old, slightly dusty but it is quite alright and spacious for a guesthouse standard.
There were strong free wifi around the guesthouse and also a few computers on the upper floor.
The staffs, especially Mrs Tat were friendly and helpful; she gave us many suggestions on what to see and do in Phnom Penh.

This was a good place for me to stay for 3 nights in Phnom Penh. The rooms are decent especially if seen from a backpacker/budget perspective. I got a large room with TV and attached bath for just $7 per night. Check and compare the rooms when you come, some are better than others. They have a nice family run rooftop restaurant with a decent variety of options and a couple of computers for free internet. Some hammocks are up there for people to relax in and watch videos too.
The parents, the two girls and younger guy are quite friendly, another guy seems a little more serious but tries to be friendly and a third guy kind of hovers around in the morning to see what plans you have and can help arrange something though he seems to be making a little bit on the deal. But that was OK, they did well arranging my transportation to some things in the city and for the bus to Siem Reap. They have a cute friendly dog there as well.

I was living temporarily in PP and spent a month living at tat, it is a great guesthouse, the staff (especially 'Mrs Tat') will go out of their way to help you. Yes you could probably find a guesthouse with slightly sturdier walls, or a few less mossies, but it just wouldn't be as nice a place to stay overall! Tat is great value for money and they are happy to let you fit as many people as you like into your room. The food is good and inexpensive. I would recommend staying here over the other popular backpacker locations in PP as it is safer, quieter, and a good distance from all the main attractions/locations, so you can get around easily. Overall my favourite place to stay in the city! (and if you do prefer a newer room with aircon etc, Tat 2 is just down the road from Tat, so you can enjoy all the perks of staying at Tat, but with a few more luxuries as Tat 2 is newer) Enjoy!

Chose Tat because it seemed away from the tourist hubs. It was a good call. Quiet neighborhood near Olympic Stadium. Run by a nice family. Even the travelers there were more mellow than other places I stayed. Rooms were ok, though not the cleanest ever. I've stayed in much worse. When we pass through Phnom Penh again, we're back there.
