My visit to Le Duo was disappointing. In a city with as many good restaurants as Phnom Penh there is simply no reason to spend your time or money eating in a place that doesn't measure up.
I ordered the calamari as a starter and it was just awful. High quality, fresh squid is abundant in Cambodia but it was served to me at Le Duo way over fried, which left it dry, tough and tasteless. It was served with two sauces, neither of which were particularly good.
Good italian food deserves good bread and there are many, many places in Phnom Penh to get truly first rate bread. Not at Le Duo. The bread was stale and of poor quality. No crust, no flavor, no crumb.
My salad was the best part of me meal. It was crisp and and a nice mix of greens. But I had asked for it to be served with my pizza and instead it arrived fifteen minutes before my pizza. The pizza itself was nothing special. The crust could have been good--it was nice and thin and properly stretched--but they haven't mastered the baking so it came to me too gooey. The red sauce was okay and the toppings were satisfactory. But all in all, the food ranged from unsatisfactory to mostly mediocre. What's the point in that?
The staff worked hard and were reasonably attentive but they have a practice at Le Duo that is completely wrong by any restaurant standards. They clear dirty dishes off tables and stage them on clean tables in the dining room--tables that are set for future diners. The removed dishes are scraped and stacked on these tables in waiting. Whomever happens to sit there next will be eating at a table, and on a table cloth, that had dirty dishes stacked on them. This is simply an unacceptable practice. And then I had to wait for an unreasonable amount of time for my check. Not good.
All in all, Le Duo strikes me as a restaurant that must have been a good place to eat at some point in the past but now has problems in both the front of the house and the back of the house. For my money, time, and interest in a good meal, I'd try something else before returning there.
