We were well warned to stay away from the Anise Hotel across the street for hotel and food.
So the Amber Villa proved instead a decent place to stay, and mostly pleasant, except for the lack of internet service which the hotel should rethink for those travelers looking to stay in touch with loved ones, or business contacts (we went at least several unapologetic days - and no rebate - without service).
Internet was one chief reason for our selecting this hotel and paying the $35 a night. In Phnom Penh, there is currently little need to pay above $20-25 a night for a good place unless there is internet service in the room. If you do, you can and should expect either a swimming pool, or reliable internet. So we remained, but left frustrated.
This being said, the hotel staff was friendly, and (mostly) cooperative. They admittedly went out of their way to do so.
Rooms were pleasant (even if moldy) as they look to be service apartments. These included laundry which was a very nice touch, as well as breakfast. The owner was extremely nice.
This new hotel is nicely situated near the Independence Monument, at the core of the NGO Sector.
All in all, fine otherwise.
