“Pan Pacific Dhaka”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

In my mind, the Pan Pacific Sonargaon is certainly the best hotel in Dhaka. There are only two rivals; the Westin in Gulshan and Radisson near the airport. (The Raposhi Bangla (old Sheraton) will shorty close for a renovation but until then does not compare with the other three.)

The reception at the Pan Pacific is everything I expect and want from a five star; lovely, large foyer and very friendly service. The lay out is spacious with all the amenities you would expect (patisserie, restaurants, book/clothing stores, business suite, shoe shine guy etc, etc). The lift up to the room are a bit slow - but hey. As for the room, they are to a five star standard. Remember, this is Bangladesh so nothing is ever real five star like you would find in Delhi or Dubai, but this is as close as you will find. The bathroom was less than perfect as the pie plate shower head leaked all over but... hey.

The best part of the hotel is, in my mind, the most important: the poolside. A wonderful, large tiled pool and a small knee deep paddling pool next to it. Excellent pool side/bar/lunch facilities with a cabana in the corner. the gym is excellent as is the spa facilities. At night, we would come down and have our dinner outside by the poolside. Very nice. The breakfast buffet was absolutely splendid.

The Pan Pacific serves that vital role as sort of an embassy where you come off the crowded streets of a big third world city into the cool, calm - and secure - surrounds of a proper high end western hotel; one where everyone can trot around the pool in bathing suits and enjoy a cocktail or whatever. We were only going to spend one night there but opted to stay another it was so pleasurable. The staff at the front desk then allowed us to extend our departure so we could stay by the pool for some of the third day which was appreciated.

We have routinely stated at the Westin Hotel, however, on our most recent business trip to Dhaka we decided to stay at the Sonargaon due to the extravagent prices the Westin is now charging. We were pleasantly surprised with the Sonargaon, and kicking ourselves for never have stayed here previously...the main reason is because you can get peace and relaxation at this hotel due to the openess of the interior/exterior, and the amazing garden area. And peace and relaxation is necessary in a place like Dhaka.
In addition, it was also a nice walk to a large modern mall...the only downside is that there is no modern grocery store in the area (like there are many in Gulshan-2 near the Westin)...we did find one small grocery store in the large mall near the Sonargaon, but it was very limited.

Room Tip: Rooms on the street side are a bit noisey.

This hotel is very pleasant - four star rooms with five star service. The lobby and restaurants were all very pleasant and the staff were very helpful.

There is a small shopping mall near the lobby and a shop that stocks absolutely everything conceivable for a traveller, right down to DVDs to nail clippers!

I ate in all the restaurants during my stay, and the food was excellent with international, European, Indian dishes to select from. There are snacks out by the pool and in the evening times the place is very popular as there is a gym that some locals use.

I ordered breakfast in my room and it arrived, complete with hot, fresh fried eggs exactly at the time I ordered it for!

The room size and decor were like a standard 4 star US hotel. The bathroom was a little tired - however there was nothing wrong with the plumbing or cleanliness.

Room Tip: As there is only wired Internet in the rooms; bring a laptop and use it as a wifi hotspot.

Stayed multiple times and hotel has continuously improved. An oasis of calm and pleasant environs after the horrible Dhaka traffic. Rooms are comfortable, though furnishings and bathroom fittings are somewhat dated. Staff is exceedingly helpful and friendly. Fast, wired internet access only in rooms so IPad connectivity not possible. Super wireless connectivity in common areas. Exceptional pool and gym facilities. Pleasant seating area around the pool. Large lobby area seating - great for informal meetings. Good business center facilities. Four restaurants - one by the pool side, coffee shop, fine dining and and Italian. However, food variety tends to be minimal with same/similar menu for room service, poolside cafe and coffee shop. Breakfast buffet is superb in the coffee shop. Don't miss the made-to-order omelets cooked to perfection. Italian restaurant had good food, though on this visit ii was closed for renovation. Fine dining restaurant food quality and range not worth the price. Overall, a good hotel to stay in Dhaka and for business, depending on where your business is as traffic is horrendous in Dhaka.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the pool

Nice classic hotel, with excellent staff. I loved the gym and pool area and the fact that they actually have an outdoor area which is usable. The rooms are up to standard, nothing flash but ok. Airport pick up service worked fine and the driver was skilled and polite. The lobby area is great for casual meetings. The upstairs bar can be crowded and too loud, but offers good entertainment.

A decent hotel. Rooms are fine, bathrooms a little on the small side but adequate.Excellent bed and great pillows. Air conditioning is good, quiet and easy to control. Good swimming pool area and a popular gym. Table tennis is also popular by the pool. Excellent breakfast. Evening buffet was good but a little on the expensive side. A small can of beer cost $12 in the restaurant. At the duty free shop at the airport the same can was $1.Staff are excellent. Friendly and very helpful. There is tight security at the hotel. All cars coming in are checked with what I thought was a bomb detecting device. All bags have to go through airport type security at the door of the hotel. The biggest shopping mall in South East Asia is only about two minutes walk from the hotel. However, to get there, crossing the road takes a lot longer in chaotic Dhaka and it is no mean feat just to get safely to the other side.

I have been staying here for 4 days and I am satisfied with the hotel so far but considering that I have not tried the other hotels around I will keep it to the praises for now.

Pluses;

- Very secure. There are 3 layers of security considering that it is in the city centre where wanderers could end up on the property. Even so the elevator is guarded.
- As clean as a hotel in this part of the world can get.
- Very good food and pleasant staff
- Ideal for business travellers
- Good value for money
- Well-equipped gym

Minuses;
- Lack of entertainment. I would hardly bring kids here for a long stay.
- There is no wifi on Guest Floors but you can ask for a modem.
- The policing of the mini bar was annoying

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the pool otherwise you'll be looking at rocks for the duration of...
