“Worth visiting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

I didn't like the fact that some of the heritage sites were reconstructed more beautifully than perhaps they were in all their glory centuries ago. It was an interesting city, but it felt fake as a result of all the reconstruction. Very touristy area and yet, Azerbaijan isn't an extremely touristy place. It's great for those in the oil industry, but it's not very tourist friendly.

“An unexpected gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

This is a beautiful and very interesting part of a fascinating city. To fully enjoy the city you do need to obtain a detailed map, as there is so much to see amid small winding and therefore confusing alleys. However, the old city is still surrounded by its old inner wall, so in reality there is not a great risk of getting seriously lost. It is also very safe to walk around, at least in daylight, so you can relax and enjoy the delights of discovering the old city. Highlights and places not to miss are the Shirvanshah's Palace and the Maiden's Tower. Both have been superbly and fully restored. All the room and exhibit labelling is in English, as well as the Azerbaijan language, which enables you to enjoy your visit to the full. The view from the top of the Maiden's Tower is worth the small entrance few alone, although it is quite a climb up a small winding staircase through the 8 floors. Many parts of the old city are very beautiful and photogenic. To allow yourself time to explore the city and to visit the main sights you should allow the best part of a full day, particularly if you want to do it at a leisurely pace and maybe enjoy refreshment break in one of the caravanserai restaurants.

“A real eyeful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

Walking the old streets, seeing the ancient walls, meandering through the narrow corridors -- a fantastic place with so much history. Bring a guidebook, or better yet, a friend who knows the history of this marvelous place.
