After three days of staying in Yerevan without having tried Armenian cuisine, I decided to treat my husband to dinner, without however knowing where to go. We are staying at the Best Western Congress Hotel and on our way to the barber, we passed by this restaurant jusrt behind the hotel, which looked so inviting from the outside with white table linens and sparkling wine glasses and cutlery nicely arranged on the tables. We immediately decided that this was where we were going to sample Armenian dishes.
The place is cosy and homely. We were welcomed by a gentle looking elderly man, who was very helpful in guiding us through the extensive menu. As we were not very hungry, we chose one appetizer - aubergine with walnuts, fried domestic chicken with ris pilaff for our main course and Armenian red wine to accompany our food. The appetizer was a heavenly morsel of juicy aubergine roll with crispy toasted nuts. The chicken turned out to be one whole chicken or French poussin (a small chicken), but tasty and juicy that every bite was a pleasure.
As we were not very hungry, we had to forego dessert and coffee, but that was not the end of it - we were treated on the house with a taste of the local apricot brandy and some tasting of the local dessert with sesame seeds. The owner, Artusha came later to ask how we were and entertained us about this local gem of a restaurant of which he is so proud of. This pride in his restaurant can be seen on how meticulous the restaurant staff are in keeping everything shining and spotless. We were also showed on album with pictures of presidents, ambassadors and high ranking officials enjoying meals in this restaurant.
We will surely come back here again before we leave Yerevan in three days time and next time we shall make sure that we work out an appetite for a real Armenian feast!
