“Touristy. It worth a look.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2012

Amazing old buildings still in use for worship. Bit too many tourists but that's to be expected at a 1500 year old building.

“Small tower, but good view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

I was a little disappointed after seeing the place.
Like most historical sites in Vietnam, conservation & preservation is rather minimal, and there is hardly any english explanation to help me appreciate the towers more.
The view from the top is good.

“Some Culture for Beach Goers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

Today Nha Trang is a popular Vietnamese beach resort, but this is far from its original identity. It probably started life as one of the Champa's main ports, trading with places as far afield as Java and China. Champa was vanquished by the Vietnamese in the 17th century but their beautiful Hindu-Buddhist towers still dot Central Vietnam and one of the finest can be found on a hill overlooking the modern city of Nha Trang.

In researching this post I read that Po Ngar dates to the 8th century, which amazed me. At that point in history the earliest kings of Angkor were yet to come to power, and the Thais were still four hundred years away from establishing their first independent kingdom. That means that the Cham were one of the most advanced of the early South-East Asian civilizations.

Many people have commented that this is a very small temple, which is true, but it is also exquisitely proportioned and beautifully decorated. I would recommend anyone to take a break from the snorkelling and sunbathing and take a look at this site.
