“Something's Missing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2007

This is a lovely designed hotel stretching to the perfume river but it lacked atmosphere everywhere. There were plenty of people staying but never anyone around the bar areas to give it any sort of intimacy. We had a very nice room. The pool side relaxation was ruined by workmen working nearby on part of the decking but the pool area and gardens are very nice. We stayed two nights which was quite enough. The house white wine from the bar was not drinkable.

We had three nights at the Residence in October 2007 and whilst it rained pretty much constantly throughout our stay, the Residence ensured our spirits were not dampened. From the welcome drink right through to checkout the staff were attentive, friendly and helpful, always available to help but never intrusive. Right up to the general manager who was out asking guests whether they would like drinks around the pool when the sun made an appearance to the chef visitng each and every table in the restaurant, you were made to feel special and very well taken care of. The hotel is set is a spectacular colonial mansion with a gorgeous outside pool area and gardens. Our room was spacious and clean with good facilities. The hotel has a gym and whilst there are not lots of machines, there is everything you need. We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was fantastic, good value and again, the service was excellent. We did not visit the spa although we heard many good things about it and it was busy throughout. The hotel also has a business centre with free internet access which was great. Hue does not offer an abundance of luxury hotels but without a doubt, the Residence stands head and shoulders above the competition.

A great neo (but so well done) art deco hotel, with an excellent restaurant headed by a german chef. However the only hotel I visited in the world that charges for plastic key cards (1US$)(they even sent someone from the desk to look over the whole room to try to find it) if you cannot return them at check-out. They almost told us to open our luggage and empty all our clothes to get it back. At the door, the doormen all agreed that it was a ridiculous policy. So unless there is a change in management, I would not recommand this hotel.

This is a truly fantastic hotel. Full of character, lovely art deco atmosphere, helpful staff and fantastic food.
A typhoon hit Central Vietnam during my stay here, and I had to stay one night more than I had planned (time spent inside the hotel, might I add). Time flew, and we all had a great time.
I absolutely loved it, and will DEFINITELY recommend it.
It's also a really cheap hotel for what you get.
Top marks, I cannot stress this enough.

We stayed at La Residence hotel and spa for 2 nights in September. The hotel is a beautiful building, the rooms were fantastic, and the spa treaments were wonderfully relaxing. The hotel was so good it was tempting to stay by the pool the whole time instead of getting out and exploring Hue.

  • Liked — fantastic spa treatments which were very cheap compared to UK prices
  • Disliked — a bit of a walk into the main tourist district

Thought about writing about this hotel when we stayed last summer but never got around to it (planning other trips took over). My husband and I stayed here and loved it. Comfortable rooms, deco atmosphere, wonderful pool (especially when have all to one's self). OK breakfast - only problem - loud annoucements early in the morning from the bus station near by - this however would not stop me from returning.

Decent walk to attractions - if you like to walk - just take lots of water as it can be very, very hot and humid.

  • Liked — Great location (across river from citadel, perfume river boats immediately adjacent). deco atmosphere.

Whilst I'd agree with everything written about La Residence in previous comments, the fact that there were so few visitors there when we were there a couple of days ago meant that the place felt rather soulless and lacking in atmosphere.

Sure, the rooms are comfortable and well equipped, if a little choc-a-bloc with "stuff" (particularly the bathroom, where it's hard to find an empty surface to rest a glass of water!) The public rooms are fine and the free internet a bonus. We too enjoyed mojitos in the lounge and appreciated the kindness and attention of the friendly staff. But the cavernous dining room and the empty echoing corridors were a stark contrast to other experiences of Vietnam.

We found the food at breakfast time a little disappointing, maybe because of the lack of guests - it must have been difficult to maintain a standard with so few customers.

We read consistently that this is the best place to stay in Hue and believe it to be so. Let's hope a few more visitors come along and keep the place going!
