“Spectacular”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

We took a day trip from Hoi An to Hue (following the Hai Van Pass) to visit the ancient Citadel and Forbidden City. We weren't disappointed. Although there is a lot of restoration work being done (they need to be careful to restore and not replace) the forbidden city, particularly the inner Purple City) were charming. There weren't many tourists so we invariably had whole sections to ourselves. A few things to watch out for: expensive food sellers within the Forbidden city (take your food and drink with you) and the ticket sellers may have made a mistake (although I somehow doubt it) when they gave me 10,000 Dong change when it should've been 100,000 Dong...when I pulled them up, they handed over the correct change without complaint but I have a feeling this might happen more often than just a once-off.

Also, try to go to the toilet before you get there - the facilities were crude at best.

Take your camera - it's a photographer's delight!

“Its ok”

If ur visiting the citadel you visit the forbiden city too. I loved the tennis court, built by the last emperor and still in use, living history. Needs more information on the emperors I think, they all died very you after short reigns, no real reason offered for this

“Wouldn't bother with this one”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

The best part of this attraction was the rickshaw ride to it. It was the most expensive attraction in Hue and it was by far, the least interesting. As a matter of fact, we are still baffled as to what is the draw. There is one very unattractive building and a bunch of posters showing the destruction of the City during the wars. Other than that, if you don't want to have your photo taken with a royal costume on, you are pretty much done in a few minutes.

My husband and I both felt that it was a very poorly done attraction and the energy at the place was depressing. We couldn't wait to get out of there.

“Didn't bother”

We didn't even get in. After a while you get tired of being charged more just because you're tall, white and speak English. Watching group after group of Asians being admitted for nothing and then being stopped and asked for a "ticket" by the guard just rubbed us the wrong way. We left. Maybe we were tired after touring all day, but it just gets to you, you know?
