I had the misfortune of eating lunch at this restaurant today (June 23). Service started badly as my guide had to literally shout to find someone in the restaurant before a young woman ran hurriedly up to meet us. After that I was led into a room where my seat was facing the back wall of the room instead of out into the garden, something which I then had to change with no offer of assistance from the staff. Unfortunately I was booked on a set menu, which was part of the problem as the dishes chosen for me were uninspired, tired old Chinese standards instead of the cuisine of Hue. This included crab soup, shrimp spring rolls and a two main dishes of pork with stir fried vegetable and sesame beef. While the presentation of most dishes was beautiful, I was shocked at how completely lacking in taste everything was. Little to no seasoning was used and this is Hue, the centre of spicy cuisine for Vietnam. In particular the sesame beef was an inedible plate of the most vile flattened pieces of oil drenched beef. One bite was too much. The staff were somewhat attentive but soon were congregating behind me and chatting in the empty restaurant. To add insult to injury, the restaurant fills the room with bad muzak which is barely a step above what you hear in particularly long and tedious elevator rides. It made the waits between each course feel considerably longer than they actually were. The meal was finished with a fresh fruit course which included a fairly uninspired selection of fruit presented plainly. Again the selection seemed to choose the most bland flavours possible including dragon fruit and the least interesting mangoe I have had in Vietnam.
Overall this restaurant is living off its decor and ambience while hoping that it's customers don't actually care about the food they are consuming. Perhaps bus tours of elderly westerners who have difficulty eating anything too "foreign" will enjoy it, but for anyone with active taste buds, take a wide pass on this locale.
