“Okay for backpackers”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2011

My partner and I just got back from a 2 ½ month trip spending about one week in Spain, another week in Thailand and the rest of the time in Cambodia and Vietnam. TheThan Thien Hotel was by far the worst hotel of any during our trip. To think we even cut short a stay at a wonderful hotel in Hoi An (Betal Garden Homestay) in order to visit Hue. I called the Than Thien to make a booking and was informed that they had a deluxe room available. The room we were given was tiny and wait for it... it had no window. I am serious. OK. I’m exaggerating. It had a window facing an inner hallway right in front of the elevator. That was our deluxe room. I admit that most of our hotels during our trip were mid range, between $40-60 but when I saw the TP reviews, i thought I would give it a try. What a mistake. I was informed that there was no other room available and by that time we figured that for one night, we could manage. I don’t know if you have ever stayed in a windowless room but it is very weird and claustrophobic. I asked the receptionist why she hadn’t informed me when I made the reservation that all she had was an inferior room but she didn’t reply but offered us another room should we decide to stay another night. We left early the next morning. If this was a deluxe room I can’t imagine what the standard rooms are like. This hotel would be acceptable if you are a backpacker on very tight budget or a night worker who needs to sleep during the day time (in a small dark room).

At first I would like to say thank you for your review.
I also want to say sorry about your room you were given, in fact room has a big window facing an large hallway in front of the elevator with effect beautifull curtain. It is not right when you said no window. You were exaggerating when you writing about the room of my hotel.
All things in your room are very good such as comfortable bed, dark timber floor, glass shower box, LCD TV with 60 international chanels, Wifi free, working desk, mini bar, cloth case, air conditioner, telephone... every thing is 6 months old only. You only say about bad thing not say good thing.
Anyway that room was not suitable with you, because you often stay in room between $40-60, I am so sorry about that, I will renovate this room to open window in another different direction to have good view.
But one thing you should not write in your review such as:
Title "Okay for backpackers" is violates. It's insulting backpackers and night workers when says "This hotel would be acceptable if you are a backpacker on very tight budget or a night worker who needs to sleep during the day time (in a small dark room)". They backpacker and night worker are also human, sir/madam!!.
Thank you very much.

Best hotel so far in Vietnam. Staff very friendly and helpful. The rooms are beautiful and very clean. Staff can't do enough for you, they are extremely helpful.
On the downside, wifi very weak signal in rooms and the citadel & temple 1 day tour was not very good. However, the DMZ tour was great. It's quite a walk from the train station so get a taxi!
This hotel is highly recommended.

Just left this hotel today and have to say it's been one of the best so far on our Viet trip. Super location in Hue, close to DMZ bar and awesome Nina's cafe. Staff are lovely and the owner introduced himself at breakfast and when he found out we were going to the train station, gave us a lift for free. Rooms were spotless and the laundry service excellent. Don't go past this hotel!!

Me and my friend stayed for two days at this hotel. The staff was sincerely friendly and the rooms and breakfast were in one word great! It was very refreshing to have such a warm welcome, while we haven't experienced this during our 18 day holiday in Vietnam!

We stayed here in August for five nights and enjoyed our stay very much. Like other reviewers we found the hotel exceptional value for money (we have been 6 months in Asia). Modern rooms with good faclities, comfortable beds, modern decor, great hot showers (walk in shower), nice free wifi in room with good speed. The staff were always very friendly and smiling and always willing to help out. We arranged a DMZ tour and dragon boat ride through hotel without complaint at a reasonable price. Great location for 'western bars and restaurants an easy two minute walk'. We had an early flight leaving hotel at 5.45am, and they provided a take away breakfast, a nice touch from a genuinely friendly hotel. We would return.

A modest, centrally located hotel, this place completely eclipses the considerably more luxurious and expensive hotel in Da Nang where I stayed for weeks when working there. From the moment you enter the 'Friendly Hotel' you find that it lives up to its name. It turns out that the owner places a great deal of importance on customer service, right from recruiting staff to training them, and it shows. The accommodation isn't luxurious, but it's clean and pretty well everything a guest needs is present -- besides, when sightseeing in and around Hue, how much time do you actually spend in your hotel room? The hotel is well located for easy access to bars and restaurants, and the staff are helpful in offering advice. I would say that anyone visiting Hue for a few days would be crazy to spend more than the modest prices being charged by the Friendly Hotel, and visitors are unlikely to find better service anywhere else. Ultimately, what makes a difference for me and many guests is the quality of the service rather than the facilities, and for service and friendliness and helpfulness of staff, the Than Thien scores 10 out of 10.

Room Tip: Probably best to get a room in the new wing at the back of the hotel. Some rooms seem not to have wi...
