“Great three days in Saigon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2009

We have just returned from a great trip to Saigon. The Somerset Chancellor was a great hotel, new and modern fully equipped. Supermarket in the foyer, coffee shop and fresh juices for breakfast. Atms in the nearest cross street. Two minutes to the Ben Thanh market and dong koi by taxis. We ate in cafes and ice cream parlours close to the apartments no sickness experienced by any family members. Walked to the zoo, diamond plaza and surrounding shops. Pool and gym excellent. Best shopping in the Ben Thanh markets. Hotel staff helpful, collected us from the airport and organised transfer to mui ne in private car also. The apartment block has a water filtration system. Still stuck to bottled water only. Great time had by all. Kylie

Lodging is very expensive in Ho Chi Minh City (and even extremely, if you consider the standard of living), so we opted for a one-bedroom apartment for our stay. We enrolled in the Krisflyer program of Singapore Airlines to get an even better rate (this Somerset stopped now to give a 10 US bonus for members).

We also optioned for the airport transfer v.v. of 35 US. Later we realized that this is very expensive, as we also could have a taxi for 6 US single ways. But, it can be nice after long flights to have someone with your name waiting for you. We were welcomed in the car with bottles of cold water and wet towels.

The lobby is very nice and the check-in went smooth by friendly staff. We were appointed a suite on the 11th floor (of 17). There are many permanent residents on the higher floors. The suite is spacious with a large open kitchen area with all utensils (but no dish washer) and a living area. There was a table with two chairs, a working desk with chair, a sofa and easy chair. The bedroom was also spacious with one wall with an enormous wardrobe (with two bathrobes). The bathroom however was very very small, with a tiny bath. There was another small room with a washer/dryer and more lockers. Except for the bedroom the whole suite had tiles, with a carpet in the living area. This suite had two balconies, two TV sets and two airco’s.

Downstairs was a small groceries store, nice to buy items to make lunch but too limited in choice to prepare dinners. (When we finally found a large supermarket, the meat section looked so disgusting that we always ate out for dinner.) There is a café, where they serve breakfast. (With check-in we got vouchers for the whole stay.) Considering the former reviews breakfast was above expectations, a buffet with cereals, juices, milk, fruits, bread/rolls, cheeses, meats, 3 hot items and daily changing specials (for instance club sandwiches, vegetables etc). Eggs could be ordered in any way without extra charges. It was very nice that we could also order any kind of coffee, such as cappuccino or espresso, for free.

We walked from here in 10-15 minutes to the city center, so distance was not a problem. We didn’t use the Internet at the Business Center, as it was very pricey. It was very hard to find a Internet Café, but on the last day, on my way to a Temple, I found one about one mile North of the property for a fraction of the price of Somerset.

At arrival we asked for a late checkout, on the day of our departure we were told that they were very happy to give us a three-hour later checkout………………… for 50% of the daily rate!!!!!!!!!!! We were astonished; this would mean 100 US (remember, housekeeping urns far less than 1 US p.h.), so we left the suite on time. We could store our luggage and stayed in the pool area until it was time to leave. There are restrooms with showers next to the fitness room that we could use.

After all we found Ho Chi Minh City somewhat disappointing, with not much to see. Also when we were on our way, a friendly ‘no, thank you’ wasn’t enough to stop being followed. We will never return to Vietnam, as tourists here are only considered as walking purses, encouraged by the government with their visa policy. (Even when you leave from the airport the shops at the departure floor will ask more than 3 US for a small coffee, one floor down you pay half the price in Vietnamese Dong in the same shops for the same coffee.) If you do have to stay in Ho Chi Minh this Somerset can be a good option, but check the rates of other hotels as well.

Stayed over the Tet 2009 holiday and had a great experience. Took up a 2 bedroom suite, generously sized, well equipped and extremely clean.

I had asked the reception for various recommendations and help throughout the stay and received great advice and good places to go. Grabbing a cab was easy, just out the door and never had to haggle with cabs sitting out the hotel on the meter / etc.

Breakfast was downstairs at the highlands coffee shop and was acceptable. Enough for the few days we were there. A little odd that only 2 coupons were provided (based on a 2 room suite) but if extra's were needed it would have been an extra 5 USD per. For what it was worth, they should really lump that in and give the 4 coupons in the price.

Nevertheless, I would very well recommended this location to anyone looking to stay out at Saigon. It is slightly off the main drag (ie. not as noisy.. which is good in my book) and even so, was only a 10 min walk into town or a quick 2-3 min cab ride which would cost all of a dollar and change ...

Rooms were clean, I was comfortable going barefoot and noticed they mopped the floor daily, and everything worked well. Decor is pretty neutral but then, can't really fault anything either. Good quality fittings and comfortable beds. Area felt safe with embassies all around and as characteristic of ho chi minh, has shady trees all througout.

First class property and management, with all conveniences on premises. Units are large and clean/well-maintained, but decor is very neutral and dull and getting a bit dated. Front desk staff are very helpful with questions and inquiries. The location is somewhat out of the main part of district 1, but it grew on me over my stay. It is easy, quick and cheap enough to grab a taxi (or motorbike taxi if you dare) into the main shopping and dining district. I think this place represents real value and is a good choice for a longer stay. The kitchen is fully equipped and generously sized, including washer/dryer. Minimart downstairs very conveneint and reasonably well-stocked. Breakfast is a basic buffet at the Highlands Coffee downstairs. Even a salon on-prem, where I had an decent unscheduled mani. Overall, very decent, spacious and well-priced.

  • Liked — Comfort and size of accomodation
  • Disliked — Too high charges for in-room internet access

Wherever I am and whenever I can, my first choice of accomoodation is a serviced apartment and Somerset is always my first choice. Although it took several requests before I got a reservation for a two bedroom apartment, it was well worth the trouble. It is a spacious and weill furnished apartment. It is located just a couple of kilometers from the heart of the city but is half the rate of a single room at the Sheraton. Taxis are easily accessible to go to any part of the city. Breakfast is passable but the Highlands Coffee cafe makes a really decent latte/cappuccino which you may order as part of the continental breakfast. For a couple of days, we enjoyed their Vietnamese noodles Pho across the hotel where the locals eat.

The Somerset reception staff were very accommodating with our numerous requests to change our restuarant reservations. They had helped us book a tour guide and van for our visit. We felt very well taken care of and Somerset, again, is true to his service standards.

  • Liked — spacious apartment with kitchen and laundry
  • Disliked — the second bathroom is located at the kitchen?

I got into HCM on a very early morning flight but the staff was very accomodating and prepared the room for me though check-in time is not for another 4 hours. Great Service ! When I got into the room, it was huge, spacious and clean. It was a girls weekend spa trip that I had with my 3 other girlfriends who flown in from Australia and Japan. But as it was a very last minute arrangement, we didnt have time to search for a place and just grabbed the 1st available 2 bedroom apartment that we can get and we are all prepared to camp out in the dining or living room if it get too cramped for 4 of us. But not only that didnt happen, the room is so huge that sometimes I dont even know if the girls are in the living room watching telly or back in the bedroom. The only dissatisfaction is on our last night in HCM, the aircon in the master bedroom was leaking so badly that we had to use 2 big bath towels to soak up all the water. Another point to note, dont bother to try the food at the cafe downstairs, it's terrible. You asked for hot chocolate, they served you cold milk and food is terrible. You will be better off to just go across the road to eat "Pho 24" . If not of these 2 glitches, I would have given this place an "Excellent". Again the service at the reception is superb, though their English is not very good, they will try their best to solve all your questions which is very impressive.

  • Liked — Spacious Room
  • Disliked — Leaking Aircon

We checked in to the one bedroom apartment at the 10th floor. We were surprice with the size of the apartment and how well equiped it is. From washer to cloth dryer, from stove to microwave oven, from TVs to DVD player, from tea pot to wine glasses, from fridge to toaster, you can get almost what you want. The two TVs with 50 channels (from those Korean channel to French and Germany channel) are particulaly useful.

Stay here again? Yes. But I don't think we will visit HCMC again as the whole family was infected Hep A after taking seafood at the Ben Tahn market.
