I went to 27 Grill last Saturday night. The security to get into the restaurant verges on surreal. One would think you were about to go backstage at a rock concert. Thankfully, we had reservations so the dour and suspicious guards let us pass through. We weren't even frisked. Once in the restaurant, the staff was far more pleasant though not exactly friendly either.
We sat on the rooftop which does have wonderful views of the city. Since we were not in a hurry, we decided to have drinks and apps first. The appetizers, oysters and foie gras, arrived and we were almost finished and still no drinks. The oysters were plump and buttery, the foie gras just ok.
After asking a second and third time, the drinks appeared. (Note to almost every restaurant in Saigon: Don't have multiple servers on one table. I was asked by three different servers if we wanted to order. It does not inspire confidence that your order is being handled correctly) Vodka martini was fine but the Appletini (my wife's order) had little vodka and tasted like candy. Not particularly impressive for a place that is better known for its bar scene.
We then ordered steaks, ribeye and tenderloin, US Choice (alas no prime steaks here). They were well executed. The sides on the other hand were ordinary, small and over-priced. We also each ordered a glass of wine which did come more promptly but were some of the smallest pours I have experienced in a very long time.
The dessert choices were uninspired and looked like nothing more than an afterthought so we decided to pass.
The Chill Bar music and was not too annoying from he rooftop although the lyrics "licka, licka, n..ga" were rather offensive (granted most of the patrons probably have no idea). However exiting through the dining area, the music was so loud and the bass so prominent that it is hard to believe that someone could digest without indigestion. So my suggestion would be to eat early if you are inclined to sit indoors.
In short, not a great value proposition and is still a nightclub/bar trying to be upscale. Pricing wise it has the upscale thing down but there are better and more creative options. I will say that it appears you do not have to wait in line to get into Chill Bar if you dine there but then one has to ask why in the world would you wait in line for a bar anyway?
