After much dithering about whether to go for the Hyatt or Legend, we decided to try this non-chain hotel. It is exactly that. A unique and special experience. Upon entering it is over the top: towering atrium ceiling in stained glass, lots of marble, ornate furniture. All in perfect repair and gleaming. My first thought was, this was what great hotels used to look like before we were all convinced minimalism was cool. A quick two minute check-in and we were in our room.
The entry to the room is all white with marble floors and gives a feeling of spaciousness. We were on a high floor and had a great view of the river. The bedroom area is carpeted which looked almost brand new. Lots of TV choices. The bathroom was comfotable athough not super new type but housekeeping was amazing and it always felt really luxurious with the wonderful towels which another viewer already commented on. Robes, slippers and amenities were high quality. We had room service once. It arrived quickly, was excellent and reasonably priced.
Breakfast was included. We ate it in the garden next to the pool. The Legend has the only ground level garden with towering palms and flowers in Ho Chi Minh. We lingered over breakfast at least 2 hours every day. A huge selection of breads and pasteries. My favorite were the petit pain au chocolat and the mango bread. Also a good selection of European cheeses and pates and terrines. Waffles, pancakes and omlettes were all freshly made and there was a huge baked ham every morning. There was even moussaka and a great Silcilian basil chicken dish one morning. Huge pots of coffee were delivered promptly. A wonderful break from workday breakfasts. We enjoyed the pool that seemed to be almost empty and the fitness facility had about 20 pieces of equipment, next to the pool so very convenient. One need not go back to the room. There are lockers so to the gym, pool, then shower and back into regular clothes. The spa next to the pool was reasonably priced for a hotel (only marginally more than downtown and certainly much more salubrious) and the massage was excellent.
Small things like live music, traditional and classic, gave the hotel an old world charm. Also, we were given 8 PM checkout without one bit of hassle and no charge. The Legend is only 10 minutes on foot from downtown and is a real oasis to come back to. We paid $127 on Agoda and I consider this the bargain of the year. All staff were excellent. Someone always rushed to press the elevator, taxis were ordered by the doormen quickly and we also arrived without any hassle, breakfast staff were extremely attentive and the breakfast food display was perfectly maintained. It made one feel we were really stepping out of daily life. A rare find. We'll be back.
