“A work in progress”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

We recently stayed at the Rex and although overall it was a pleasant experience the downside was the renovation work being carried out on the rooftop bar area.Quite a lot of carpeted areas are tired and need replacing which I am sure is on there agenda. They have 2 pool areas and only one is staffed. The room was fine with all amenities although our friends needed to change from their first room which was dated and very small. The breakfast was good and the location superb. The staff were very helpful and I would like to return once renovations are complete.

We travel to HCMC quite often with our 2 boys aged 11 and 12. We had always wanted to stay at the Rex so on the tail end of a Cambodia trip we finally booked a night. One night was quite enough. Maybe it was all the hype or the anticipation that it was going to be something outstanding but... unfortunately, it was very average and not anything special - other than the pretty wood floors (which made the up stairs person who dragged their desk chair around very loud). Maybe our expectations were too high. The room was average (but the bed was VERY comfortable), no charm at all, view to rooftop air con units, the roof top bar was described as magical and while nice it was not really that special . The hotel seems to cater more towards the Asian traveler with their ground floor ultra chic name boutiques and breakfast buffet. On the up side the staff was extremely nice, I loved the old B/W pictures of Saigon scattered throughout and the location is great.

The Rex Hotel is well located in District 1. The hotel has a lot of character, we stayed in a Rex Suite (overlooking the main intersection - with great views) which was extremely spacious and very comfortable. A couple of mornings, we heard band music & presentations from the street, so if you want quiet, I would suggest a internal room. We were keen for the view and so found it ok, it helped us to rise a bit earlier and tackle more tours. I would also suggest not staying on the 4th floor directly under the Rooftop Bar...quite noisy up until 11.30pm. The service from the Front desk was excellent, but the food/beverage service at breakfast was standard. The breakfast buffet was ok, but nothing special (a lot of Asian foods are catered for). Lacked some healthy cereal and once food ran out, it was rarely topped back up.

I would recommend the Rex Hotel, for the price and location to all major attractions.

Rex Hotel ideally located in District 1, but regrettably with all the construction outside with the closure of the main roundabout - sadly the Rex Hotel location (for now) has lost some of its ambiance and likely will be a mess outside for sometime.
The hotel inside is very nice - staff were very helpful and the ladies on reception addressed both myself & wife each time by name as we approached - that was impressive
we too a Rex Suite (larger room) with balcony but as above it overlooked a construction site.
The hotel itself and facilities insiode are good and very comfortable. The breakfast also was good catering for both western and Asian needs.

The location in District 1. is ideal beside the Opera House and walking distance to variety of restaurants & shops - but the outside is definitely a distraction but no fault of the rex Hotel

The hotel is lovely. In the perfect position for everything. Room is large and has all the amenities you need apart from a view! The roof bar is being renovated, didn't know this and although you can still get a drink there ,the breakfast has been relocated to the ground floor. Not only was it complete bedlam, but the food was not good and often not refilled. This was very disappointing as I had enjoyed it so much the first time.

Originally my partner and I were going to spend the rest of our holidays with family. It was a last minute decision to book a hotel. It was the best decision we made. We asked for rates in the hotel but staff reccommended us to go online and book to receieve a better rate. We booked the rex suite but got upgrade to an even better suite (governer suite). It exceeded all my expectations. The room was huge, we didn't really need an Extra bathroom and lounge but the room was just amazing. The staff were genuinely happy working and provided us with loads of info with stuff to do. The location was very close to many shops like vincom center 1&2, parksons, saigon square, ben thanh etc. Our room was located on the 5th floor in the west wing and heard no construction whatsoever. Although drinks are overpriced here its really the atmosphere that carrys the hotel. The only negative I had was the breakfast buffet, while it had a large selection many of the hot foods were barely warm and dried out. Other than that I'd be happy to stay here again.

The hotel is an old dog that's being upgraded. As a result construction work noise affects many rooms and there is nothing that can be done about it.
Staff are quite friendly but service is mediocre and a bit commie style. The hotel appears to be part of a government chain.
Outlet prices are insane-it's hard to comprehend that you are in Vietnam. Like $10 for a juice at the courtyard cafe? hello! That sort of overcharging permeates the whole operation.
Beware of over friendly touts who hang around the front entrance and have the blessing of security.Ignore or be ripped off.

Room Tip: Don't get a room near alteration work.
