“Good Hotel Downtown Saigon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2010

The Grand Hotel is well placed in the city it is a well maintained the staff are polite and helpful the room we had was a suite in the old wing overlooking the pool which was worth while because living out of a suit case can be a challenge in some hotels because of room size but no problems here we think it was value for money .

This hotel is part of Saigon’s history and has some charming features in the old part of the building. The lobby, beautiful lift and the attractive frontage impressed, as did the lovely linen and traditional decor in our room. The room itself was not large and we were concerned about the noise resulting from people walking on the parquet floor, but actually it was minimal. Given the city centre location, it is great to have a courtyard pool area and bar – and the staff there certainly did their best to make it pleasant with good service, poolside barbeque and happy hour. Breakfast was nothing special, a fairly dull buffet served in an overcrowded room. The hotel is right in the middle of HCM and in walking distance of anywhere of interest which, in truth, is actually very little. One night was certainly enough for us. The traffic was horrendous and the constant (and heart stopping) challenge of crossing the road in a country where nobody stops for pedestrians was worsened by the HCM practice of driving on the pavement so we were glad to leave.

A 4 star hotel does not say anything in Vietnam, however with all the comments on tripadvisor we decided to give it a shot. It was a very big disappointment!!!
Due to asthmatic problems, we always request for a non-smoking room on a non-smoking floor in advance. We emailed with the hotel and they confirmed by e-mail that a room was blocked for us on a non-smoking floor.
When we arrived we were put in a smoking room, how strange... Anyway, it could be that the receptionist had overlooked our request, so we gave her the benefit of the doubt. We were transferred to a non-smoking room on a 'non-smoking' floor. The cleaning staff and other guests were allowed to smoke on this non-smoking floor surprisingly. When we complained there was no possibility to move to a different floor! The message was quite clear, we just had to deal with the situation.

We bought some souvenirs in HCMC and had no more space in our bags, so we requested the concierge for a plastic bag or carton box or something in order to make sure we could bring alomg our stuff. This simple request was already too much for the concierge...

Pick up service from the airport is 20 USD, however a normal taxi costs +/- 6 USD. When we mentioned this over the phone, suddenly the airport pickup was only 10 USD. We still refused to use the transfer after which the lady on the phone dropped the price to 8 USD. This is ridiculous behavior from hotel staff. A hotel is a place where you should not have to bargain for these kinds of things.

Breakfast was very basic and not good. The worst brekky I had in 2 weeks actually, with only little choice for western standards.

On the positive side, a very spacious room with proper beds. Quite noisy however and the bathroom is small and old, but clean.

this was a first class hotel to stay in, very beautiful, rooms in the old wing are very romantic old school french colonial style, very luxurious and great staff. beware though of present construction next door to the new wing. has excellent spa and massage facilities for the man.

we stayed at the Grand late June this year and had a wonderful stay. My children are 12 and 9 and had a whole bedroom to themselves. Large beds, very clean, lovely bathrooms and separate lounge area with tv. We had a problem with our key and the door wouldnt open - withing minutes about 3 staff were there and the problem fixed. The restaurant staff were lovely, as were the reception staff. The only complaint I have is that the doorman clearly had a friendship with a ripoff taxi company and we subsequently got ripped off several times. However, ripped off meaning $10 instead of $3... The Vietnamese people were fantastic and I cant wait to go back.
