“Fantastic Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2012

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights at the beginning of our trip. It was lovely and a fantastic start to such a great trip. The area isnt the best but with cheap taxis and shuttles you barely notice it. The reception and dining staff are great, the spa reception staff could be improved slightly but were still good.

I believe this hotel is used alot for business travel in particular by the japaense, but its a great all rounder.

The breakfast buffet is very good just dont be put off by one of the grumpy looking chefs doing the eggs :). The only disappointment I had was to a man lighting up a cigarette near our table and not being asked to put it out. We had room service alot too and this was very good (and affordable) too.

We used the Spa quite a few times for massages and this was also very good and affordable.

The only negative was that I was hoping it would be a little cheaper to stay in 5 star in HCMC as I could easily stay here for a week or so, but it just works out to pricey.

I really loved Saigon and will happily go there again and stay at the Equatorial.

I choose Equatorial as it was my wedding dinner location in Kuala Lumpur as its makes a real remembrance of my marriage. Personally I like Equatorial and overall it is a perfect place to start our trip at Ho Chi Minh and Central Vietnam. I love their complimentary shuttle service very much and also their comfortable bed and pillow which are important to a good sleep comparing to a 4 star hotel at Danang.

Here is my review on Equatorial:-
Hotel Environment: Business class rating even it has a feeling of old but the design is classical and of course a typical equatorial interior design which I like it very much.
The Chinese restaurant Orientical located at first floor is nice as well after trying their fried rice and hokkien mee. I would recommend it to the guest for a simple meal at the hotel.

Around the hotel: The hotel actually located outside the city center which is little far but relax and quiet. Remember hotel at the city center might be noisy as there are many motorbikes on the street. Luckily the hotel provided complimentary shuttle service to the main attraction. There are not much restaurants or street food around the hotel. There are 2 seafood restaurants about 100m across the hotel which I never try but you may explore.

Hotel Service & Staff: Hotel service is average as some staff at the concierge is excellent but not consistent. I like to comment on the shuttle service as I found out that they are quite consistent at pick up location near the opera house which not like commented by some TA. Personally there might be misunderstanding as I notice there is multiple drop off point but there are only 1 pick up point at opera house. Just wait at the opera house at schedule given and you will see the shuttle service by Equatorial.

Room Comfort: The room is comfortable. I always opt for the non-smoking room and the hotel management handles the non-smoking room very well. Non-Smoking room are located at 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th floor.

Fantastic, amazing buffet breakfast, good location (located a 5 minute drive out of the tourist area). Great pool: although the hotel itself isn't catered towards a family. Very happy.

Room Tip: There are non smoking floors which makes for a nicer time.

This hotel is spotless; the staff are conscientious, friendly and do their utmost to ensure a great stay. The area is not great, but that is easily overcome by the six daily complementary scheduled shuttles to District 1 (main commercial area, Cathedral, Reunification Palace, and market). I loved the following attributes: great beds, pillows, and linens; daily soft towel change; fantastic health centre; lovely pool; and the superb breakfast buffet. Our breakfasts were included, but we found the other meals to be excellent, but quite pricey - even by North American standards. The international clientele includes North Americans, Russians, Australians, French and British guests.

We stayed at the equatorial hotel for a total of 5 nights. Everything was fine, breakfast was pretty good, they had a large selection of foods you could choose from at the buffett.

The location of the hotel is a little far from district 1 where all the fun things are happening. It's in district 5 which is about a 10 minute ride to the city center depending on traffic. We booked online and got a great rate with a promotional code. Ended up being 125 USD a night. Not bad for a 5 star in hcmc. The room wasn't amazing, but still had robes, other amenities and such.

I had a few gripes about the hotel, one being that all the front desk hotel staff including the manager barely spoke a word of English. How are they supposed to function like this? Thus ending up being very frustrating when inquiring about simple things such as the hotel bill. I had to say "bill" 5 times for her to understand me. There was a gentlemen who helped us on the first day that was very helpful but then we never saw him again. From then on it was all women and it was game over. Talking to the wall would have been more productive.

We had a coffee at the overpriced and super slow and bad serviced chitchat coffee bar. $16 USD for 2 coffees and a pastry! Took a few tries and 20 minutes later to get it but we did. And it wasn't even good. They need to step it up a few notches there.

I would return again though as the value was good, but they really need to improve on their service here. For a 5 star hotel they should at least speak basic English.

This is my follow up review for Hotel Equatorial. Our two seperate stays in three weeks at Hotel Equatorial ended with mild approval, but overall I still feel they completely miss the point of service, especially after staying at the Carlton Hotel Singapore. Apples and Lemons (Hotel Eq being the lemons).
I feel they cannot hang on to their five star rating for much longer..............

We stayed here- 2 couples- for a couple of nights at each end of a trip north, and it was all we needed. The location is in a fairly dingy non-touristy area, but the service is impeccable, food and drink prices were reasonable, pool was nice and clean and the sunday buffet was GREAT!
Rooms fairly old but perfectly clean and all facilities, including free WiFi. Not really what I'd call five star, but fine. Would definitely consider that we got our money's worth!
