“Good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

We enjoyed our two night stay at this hotel. The room we had was nice and good sized, although the bed and pillows were a bit hard. Their breakfast was above par and the staff was very nice. A good solid hotel in a central location.

I was greeted by staff who were eager to help me to my room and assist me with getting about the city. The room was small but very clean and air conditioned. Short walk to Ben Than Market and city sights. Would recommend to anyone after somewhere clean, cool and reasonably priced.

This hotel is really well positioned within minutes of the Ben Than market. The lobby area and rooms are modern and stylish and had everything you need, safe, tea/coffee, hair dryer. Breakfast was really good with a mix of asian and western food, eggs made to order and even home made yogurt and fruit. The staff were very friendly and go out of there way to make you feel welcome, fresh orange juice on arrival and if you are sitting in the lobby they always make sure you have a glass of water to drink. The rooms were a bit noisy as you could hear quite a bit from the road and the nearby school as well as water rushing through the pipes in the walls?!. I enjoyed my stay here and would be back because of their attention to detail and friendly staff.

We booked the standard room which was very small and different to the ones on the picturess, struggled to put our suitcases somewhere. Bell boys very friendly and helpful. Also we were on the 7th or 8th floor and heard the pumps going at night. The young girls on the reception were not as welcoming as we have seen in all the other south east asian hotels we have stayed in. Usually are met with a welcome drink flannel and map, advice etc but their was none of this. Later the bell boy did bring us a drink up though top the room. Also we wanted room service as tired and was 9pm. Their book in their room states room service finishes at 10pm, the girl said well it finishes at 9pm really. Eventually they agreed to cook some chicken noodles in soup for us. When this arrived the chicken had very pale looking skin on it, quite strange and have never come across before. Also they overcahrged us for this food.
Plus wise it is in a great location close to walk to museums, retaurants, the market, transport etc. The foyer of the hotel looks great and as it does on the pictures and the breakfast was delicious and cooked fresh. I think the bigger rooms are much better or maybe it is a luck of the draw if you get a bigger room or not maybe we were just unlucky, other rooms looked nice.

This small hotel only have 9 stories and 5 rooms in each floor.
the location is great just 5 minutes walk to the Ben Thanh market, yet have a quite environment.
The room size is average as i stay in a normal deluxe room.

I am not the kind of like to give tips to bell boy, tour guide and driver (typical Asian).
On the 1st day i arrived, the bell boy sent the luggage to my room. After he put in the luggage, i said thank you to him. he don't want to leave my room, seem like waiting for something. After that he "looked like" very helpful, show me all the amenities in to room, safety box, mini bar, TV, Shower.

I know what he meant, so i gave him 5000 dong. He look at me, seem like not enough. I took out another 5000, then he only willing to leave my room with the unhappy face.

After i using my currency converter to calculate i only noticed that 5000 dong is just USD 0.25. No wonder he was so unhappy.

Overall the stay was happy.

But the bed was really too hard. Like sleep on the spring and not the mattress.

Breakfast was nice, stay there 4 nights, everyday had different dishes.

We had just one night at this hotel before flying back home and were a bit sorry that we hadn't found it earlier. We had booked a Deluxe Double Room at $55 per night but when we arrived the hotel said they had upgraded us. The room they gave us (I don't know what standard it was) was a nice comfortable size (quite roomy) with a large window. We were particularly impressed with the decor of the hotel in general and the room in particular. It seemed quite new and was very bright and modern with plenty of lighting which is something that we had found great difficulty with in other hotels in Vietnam where the lighting was insufficient and always dim. But not at the Ruby River. The breakfast selection was very good, compared to other hotel we had stayed in in HCMC.

The standard of the hotel was so pleasant that I would like to go back again if I visit HCMC again although the main downside is that the street in which it is located is a quiet kind of local backstreet with no nice shops of cafes nearby. The other hotel we had stayed in previously (it was pleasant, but not as fresh as the Ruby River) was in a laneway off Le Loi and that location (a block or two from the B T Market) had a great variety of nice shops and eating places right on its doorstep which made for a great locale. Well, it just shows that you can't have everything.

The staff at Ruby River were pleasant and helpful - ordered a cab for us to go back to the airport and didn't overcharge. They only asked 170,000 VD for the taxi whereas we had been charged up to $14 by another hotel. The actual meter charge both coming and going from the airport was 130,000 VD, so we paid about $2 over the odds for the hotel calling the cab and it being pre-paid. This was particularly useful as we wanted to use up our final Dong before heading to the airport and wanted to make sure that we had the taxi fare covered.

The main criticism is that all through the night there was some kind of rumbling noise in the building which while it didn't prevent us from sleeping was, nevertheless, something that would have been better without - the Hotel will have to look into that and try and sort it out.

I'm happy to recommend it and would go back again.
