“back packer area not recommended”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

we went to see the back packer area,it was very busy with people from various country's around the world,we were told that it was a cheap place to eat,but found out that its not true we went to large restaurant as it was busy so thought it must be ok,when we received the meal we couldn't cut the meat as it was so tough when we complained the waiter said sorry and gave us the bill which certainly was not cheap we also noted that other people walked out.so will certainly not return, think the restaurant was called cowboy on the corner of the main road

“The most concentrated lodgings area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

Alternatively, a backpacker heaven. Lots of small lodgings and hawkers food. Very hectic and somehow I feel a bit too crowded. Not my kind of place and seriously, I do not think it is a tourist attraction per se. It is more on where to stay on budget. :-)

“Hectic!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

Be aware of the mopeds, it's a free for all. A good tip was to hold one arm up when crossing the road ....
Police told us a couple of times to be careful with our bags & locals we met also told us to be careful ... So be aware, they are saying it for a reason.
Mental during the lead up to TET, but what an experience.
We also made a point of going to a couple of rooftop bars to see the city and river views .... These definitely come at a price ... London prices!!

“Don't Go Out of Your Way to Visit Pham Ngu Lau”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

If your hotel is in Pham Ngu Lau, or if you're dining at a specific restaurant here, you'll quickly get your fill of this unfriendly, hawker- and scam-filled neighborhood. Otherwise, you can certainly find a better use of your time.

Frankly I am rather shocked that Pham Ngu Lau is even mentioned in as a tourist attraction. Perhaps it shows how sorely Saigon is lacking in authentic attractions, points of interest and beautiful places. Perhaps Saigon is best viewed as merely a transit point, a waypoint on your journey to Vietnam's many wonderfully scenic and interesting places.

“Most things happen here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

This road has become synonymous with tour companies, cheap hostels and bars. Mst long and short distance buses drop off in this road and an plethora of accommodation can be found. There are a lot of bars open late and you can find some varying food stalls which also sell Bia Hoi.
