I have had the benefit of travelling to many countries, both for work and vacation. This vacation alone, I visited Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. My Foodie Tour with XO Tours was the highlight of my entire holiday and one of the best things I have ever done anywhere. Yes, it was THAT good, and no, I do not work for XO Tours! I just believe that when something is this wonderful, the world needs to know!
The owner/operator, Tung, is a Vietnamese American (when you hear him speak, you will realize he is very much American) who takes a hands on approach to the tour. He greeted us in person at the beginning to let us know what was in store for us, and he also showed up at many of the stops. He made it clear that we would not be eating the standard tourist fare (no pho!) but rather what real Vietnamese people eat. In fact, he did not choose the places we would go or what we would eat. He left this up to the staff. The places we were to visit are places they would go to themselves.
Frankly, the experience of zipping through the streets of Saigon on the back of a motorcycle was worth the price alone. Super fun! But when you combine this with some of the most delicious, authentic (and if you so choose, daring) food you've ever had the pleasure of eating, and as much of it as you'd like, there is very little not to love about the experience.
However, I have not even mentioned the best part, yet. The drivers are all amazingly wonderful - super relaxed, super cool, super knowledgeable, super friendly. In a word, they are simply SUPER. And I was lucky to have the beautiful Huong as my driver. I would have thoroughly enjoyed my tour without her, but having her show me around really made it all the more special. By time we were finished, I felt I had made a friend. How often can you say that about a tour? All in all, a truly wonderful experience with a wonderful guide.
Tung told me that it was a challenge living up to the very high ranking on tripadvisor and the great expectations this leads to, so he probably would rather I not be so effusive with my praise. But the fact is that if you're in Saigon for at least one evening, you would really be missing out if you were not to do this. It really is that good!
