“Great boat trip....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2011

Left Ho Chi Minh city at 7.30 am....arrived after 2.5hr by car provided with the travel agent...

Trip started with visiting coconut candy ,making island...here we can see the whole process of the candy production...also we get to test the candies....

Continued by visiting another island where lunch is prepared(cost included)....I did my own vietnamese wraping....hehe...

After finished lunch, tour was continued with visiting the honey making site...here we can try and buy the original and tasty honeys...

After few minutes of chats and laugh, departed by smaller boat of 4 people cruising into smaller canals....

The trip ended by the attraction of local/ traditional song sung by a group of 4 people playing unique instruments...

“River Boat and Bikes up the Mekong”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2011

Our family of 4 plus one mother in law started our 4 country trip in Ho Chi Minh with Yi, our guide. After our landing, we went straight to the ChuChi Tunnels, had an outdoor lunch a few miles away from there at a lovely restaurant and to the War Museum, we took ourselves to Quan An Ngon for an evening dinner.
But with all of this as a perfectly orchestrated start, our guide from Le Cochinchine brought us to their boat the next morning on an overnight up the Mekong with everything better than we could've imagined. The highlight was a bike trip on the shores through farmland and rice fields, meeting the locals, experiencing harvesting rice, stopping by a local school, etc. Of our entire excursion, this was where we felt we were immersed in the culture of the true Vietnam - thanks to our guide!

“Best part of trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2011

Fun...packed in a LOT of activities, jumped in/out of a lot of boats...

When you do these types of tours, you have to have an open attitude and be willing to try new things. This was truly a trip I won't forget....see the pix, they explain it better than I could...

“Feel ripped off and service is not as promised”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2011

I sent email to mekongboatsvietnam on Dec 24 inquiring about one day tour for 3 people for Dec 26, 2010 for Cai Be, Vinh Long, Sa Dec. On the same day I got a reply from Binh Nguyen Huu with the tour description going from SaiGon - Cai Be - Vinh Long - Sa Dec. He quoted a price of 110 USD /person/group of 3 people. He also describes that the trip will include Private Sampan boat and during the cruise there will be services of fresh and cold towels, fresh seasonal fruit, mineral water, hot green tea and coffee.
Although the price is quite high, I thought maybe it is during christmas season and it is after all a last minute private tour. Pictures looks good so we went ahead and booked the tour.

At first I asked to be picked up at 9.30 am but Binh told me that the market will be closed at 10 am so we agreed to be picked up at 7.00 am instead.

Turns out the Mekong Boats Vietnam company hire another tour company in HCMC called Vietnam Today Tourist Co., Ltd - www.vinaday.com.

A young man (Phan?) picked us up from the hotel and he speaks very limited english. He mentioned he never been to Cai Be or Vinh Long so he cannot tell us about the tour. We are going to meet another tour guide when we arrived in Cai Be.

It takes about 2 hour drive from HCMC to Cai Be, arriving at the river pier. We are the only tourist around when we arrived, which I found very strange. I asked Phan about this and he said we are early. Then we stand around for another 10 minutes waiting for the tour guide. Finally an elderly vietnamese man introduced himself as Kristof (spelling?) and he will be our tour guide. He speaks limited english and kinda hard to understand. We wait another 5 minutes for the boat to arrive.

The boat is not at all comfortable, regular long wooden boat with small wooden chairs. During the cruise there is no service at all, we did not receive any cotton towel, green tea, mineral water, exotic fruit whatsoever, as described in the tour description.

Things get even worse when we arrived at the supposedly market. We did not see any colorful floating market, instead we cruise along very quiet river area with several boats carrying radishes, pumpkin, and watermelon. Not at all a market, only a handful of boats on sunday morning. The guide will point to a boat from time to time and say there's pumpkin... that's watermelon.... very boring and there is NOTHING colorful. Everything looks almost the same color with the river's brownish water. When Phan detected our disappointment, he tried to blame the hanoi tour operator and mentioned that vinatour never brought people to cai be market because it is a small market. I found his statement is untrustworthy because at first he said he never been to cai be market. How would he know cai be is a small market? Nevertheless, maybe some things got lost in translation because he speaks very little english.

Afterward we cruise for some long period until we arrived at the local home factories. The rice paste and rice pop corn making is quite interesting.

Overall, it has been a very disappointing tour and I will not recommend this to anyone. Definitely not worth 110 USD per person. Maybe 10 USD per person at most. I wrote an email to Binh regarding our disappointment and he did write a nice apology email but no refund.

Tips about Vietnam in general, find some local whom you trust and speak the language who can confirm things for you. Vietnamese people are very quick to say YES to everything and they will not hesitate to substitute things without checking with you. Even in major hotel like Sheraton, let say I ordered chamomile tea and the hotel ran out, they will automatically serve you some other tea instead of checking with you first. When you ask for something, almost everyone will say Yes, yes, yes, even though they do not quite understand what you mean.

“Personal touch on a Mekong Day Tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2010

With just one day spare in Saigon I contacted Jason via Trip Advisor reviews, who arranged a 1 day tour for us to suit our interests. A Private car picked us up for the ride to Cai Be, and our lovely guide Huong met us for the trip by small boat to the floating markets. We had a boat driver - Thich (also lovely)- all day who dropped us and picked us up at various locations. We cruised to a beautiful Buddhist Pagoda, then to Mr Sau Ca's fruit orchard and home on an island where we caught fish for lunch ( easy, they are in a pond and you scoop with a net). He gave us a taste of his homemade Longan wine which is very nice and very strong! He has a beautiful place with fruit trees, and gave us a taste of many herbs used in local cooking as well as fruit that he grows. Lunch was wonderful, including the fish caught, then a rest in the hammock. Back to Cai Be via waterways and canals, then the drive back to Saigon. Thankyou to Jason for arranging this for us, unfortunately we didn't meet as he was busy with another tour that day but he was kind enough to give us a phone call while we were being driven back to Saigon. Good service.
