My colleagues and I were in HCMC for a work meeting and I had sought some recommendations from a local friend; he recommended Trois Gourmands and so we there we were.
The place is known to reputable taxi drivers, I noticed there were other restaurants in the area, which seemed more a residential area than for commercial F&B outlets.
The restaurant itself seems to be an old house, full of character and ambience. Warm homely tones with a French-Vietnamese touch.
The food was good and made with a lot of heart, it was not your typical hoity toity sort of fare you get in the big cities, but sincere and done with quality ingredients - well, as good as you can get importing European products to a far-away communist country like Vietnam.
The highlight of the evening must be Chef Gils himself. He is a larger than life, warm, effervescent, and genuine man you don't want to miss meeting. Bonus points if you know a little French. Chef made excellent recommendations for both food and wine. If you are into wine, don't miss the chance to visit his cellar near the entrance. He imports wine from his home region in France, so there are many you may not be able to taste elsewhere.
Overall a wonderful experience, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting HCMC in want of a good unpretentious French meal, greeted by warm amiable service, in the comfortable surrounds of an architectually interesting heritage house.
