“Your Dollars Go A LONG Way With Long Hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

Travelers can never go wrong with Long Hostel.

It is not a fancy place, but its warm & friendly staff, and clean & affordable rooms more than make up for it.

Staying here truly feels like home. One feels welcomed, safe and truly taken cared for. In fact, one would feel like a VIP.

Our trip to Saigon was delayed for almost 3 hours. My wife and I got worried that the airport pick up arranged by Mrs. Long will no longer be there. And that we would have to find her place on our own at 3 in the morning. But the driver, who was supposed to pick us up, actually waited for us. When we arrived at Long Hostel, the staff greeted us with a smile, didn't hassle us with registration, and simply invited my wife and I to rest. From that time, we felt so at ease with the services of Long Hostel.

In our 4 days stay here, we never encountered a problem with Long Hostel. Mrs. Long, her family and staff helped us with everything that we needed. She gave very good recommendations on places to go, where to eat, to have our dollars exchanged to dong, what tour companies to take (she actually tries them out before recommending any of them) and other valuable tips. Her staff prepared a filling breakfast every morning and iced coffee & snacks every afternoon for us. Truly a treat after a long day of sightseeing and tours.

We thank Mrs. Long and her staff for such a wonderful experience.

If you need a nice place to stay in Saigon, do check out Long Hostel (at Pham Ngu Lao St. behind a wet market).

Room Tip: Request for a room at the lower floors since there is no lift.

We had a great time in Long Hostel. We booked two rooms for myself, hubby, and my two daughters. We stayed for 6 nights. My kids loved staying in the room. The room it self is quite basic with a small tv (intenrational channel although sometimes the reception is quite bad), cupboard, shower, small refrigerator.

Pro:
1) top notch care from Ms Long and family. You can feel that they are very sincere in providing the service and meant their smiles.
2) the open area is usually full with guest hanging around to talk and use the computers so you do meet people
3) great location. Very near a small market. Ben Tahn market is about 10 mins walk for me. A lot of choices to eat nearby. i suggest the corner shop Pho Shop very close to the hostel

Cons:
1) the room was smaller than Ms Long's previous hostel. My family had the chance to stay in the original hostel last year and they told me that the room was better at the old hostel (still operating). But you have to walk to the new hostel to get breakfast though so we opted to stay in the new hostel.

I would recommend this hostel to stay in HCMN. Great location but you cannot beat the care that the Longs provide. It trully feels like home.

We booked a double room in this cheap and cheerful hostel. It's at one end of the main backpacker road (Pham Ngu Lao) and behind a market (Thai Binh) down a small alley. The room was relatively small and basic but clean with a double bed, TV with satellite channels, small fridge, ensuite shower room/toilet, small wardrobe and a small window. The aircon was good and kept the Saigon heat away very nicely.

The best thing about this hostel is that the family who own it are really nice and welcoming and they do their best to accommodate your every wish. There is also free wifi throughout the hotel and a couple of computers in the lobby free to use as well. They also do bottles of water at a very reasonable price (better than buying them from anywhere outside). We did not partake in any of the breakfasts as we never got up early enough but it is included in the price. The only gripe I can possibly think of is that there are no lifts but they have a bellboy to take your luggage up to your room anyway.

For a cheap, safe place to sleep and leave your belongings, you can't really go wrong with the Long Hostel.

Room Tip: If you can't handle stairs very well then request a room on the 1st floor, there are no lifts.

Mrs. Long and her staffs are really helpful and willing to assist us and treat us just like their family. They provided the welcome drink, banana, and Mrs. Long explained us the interesting places to see, recommended us the best nearby restaurants and paid attention to our needs (sim card, or tour or transportation or anything else).

They charge at a reasonable rate for the rooms but we get their care and hospitality which we cannot find from any five star hotel.

Mrs. Long and staffs have various yummy breakfast meals served every morning. They give attention to every individu. We really appreciate for their care and hospitality.

The guesthouse is situated in the middle of the city which accessible and near from any facilities and interesting places. Taxi or other mode of transportation is a few steps away.

Do not look for other hostel. Just go to Long Guesthouse. Very recommended.

Ferdinand and family stayed for 6 nights in August 2012.

Room Tip: If you are a family of 5 persons, you can rent the dormitory room that can accomodate your whole fam...

Upon check-in, we were given a welcome drink and briefed by Mrs. Long,on where to eat and places to visit. The map was very helpful. If you booked directly to this place via email, you will be given instructions on how to get there. Location is along an alley just away from a small wet and dry morning market and the main road. It is a quiet place, yet walking distance to where all the eateries, watering holes, shops, etc, are. Room we stayed in was double bedder, a/c, ensuite, fridge, closet, tv, table and chair. H/keeping was done and fresh fragant bath towels were supplied daily.
This place is 2 blocks away to 3 different bus outlets that takes you to other places in VN. You can plan your walkabout in District 1, where most of the touristy places are. Appreciated it when my wife had minor bowel problems and a pot of ginger tea was delivered to our room. Mrs. Long also accompanied her to the market ( less than 1 min. walk ) to assist her in buying some food back to our country.( yummy ! ). Thanks to her relatives for manning this homely place. She is like a motherly figure to us and I recommend this place to my grown-up children too!

As with the title of this review, that is exactly what we felt with the warmest of hospitality given by Mrs. Long and her family. Long Hostel is perfectly located in an alley amisdt Chợ Thái Bình, which is frenetic but lovely. The rooms are basic, no-frills (with wi-fi), yet clean and value for money. Mrs. Long's briefing of what to do, where to go, what to eat was extremely helpful. Breakfast was adequate and considering the price we paid, our expectations in every aspect (quality of rooms, location, service) were fully met. The tour arranged by the hostel to Cu Chi Tunnels were excellent. The best thing about Mrs. Long and her family was the excellent English they spoke. This made it so easy for us.

HCMC is an orgasmic city of sights, sounds and smells and the Pham Ngu Lao street is the essence. We loved the restaurant just by the alley to the hotel (the BBQ'd wild boar and the squid salad comes highly recommended). The budget friendly blind massage offered by the Ho Chi Minh Blind Association comes highly recommended and it is for a good cause.

I highly recommend Long Hostel to any discerning traveler looking for a home-like experience in a big city.

Long Hostel was really just average. The lobby is quite worn and the room was basic with no comforter and a very small window. It was clean enough but definitely not spotless. The breakfast was average as well - we were only offered pancakes or bread with jelly. Eggs or any local breakfast dish (pho, etc.) would have been much better - starting the day on sweet pancakes / bread wasn't really too appealing!

The owner and her family were friendly which was nice. And, there was fast wifi in the room. The location worked well too as it's within walking distance to a variety of backpacker restaurants and bars.

Bottom line - for the price (USD 18), we thought we could have done better. After a month of traveling through Vietnam (and staying in lodging in the USD 18 to 22 range), Long Hostel was definitely towards the bottom of the list. However, it's definitely not a bad option for a short stay - just see if you can do better!
