We had a great day with the friendly and knowledgeable Chow, our cycling guide. We were picked up from our hotel in a minivan with the bikes already inside, and drove out of the city. After about 50km, we got out and began our ride through the quieter rural roads. While there was still traffic, it was not heavy and after about 2km we turned down an even quieter road on our way to Cu Chi.
The gentle pace of the bike ride was a great way to explore a country and get 'up close' to the people and their way of life, much more than just speeding by in an airconditioned tourist bus. Local kids waved and shouted 'hello!' to us as we cycled past. All in all a very pleasant experience, getting a workout and sightseeing at the same time! At the tunnels Chow walked around with us and explained the sights. It was very personalised and I enjoyed being in a friendly group of only 5 people rather than in a crowd spilling out of an airconditioned bus.
It was moderately paced and should be fine for people in reasonable shape, although the heat can be a problem if you're not used to it. Plenty of cold drinking water is provided.
