“"A good budget boutique hotel"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2012

This is a good budget boutique hotel. The location is perfect with the Ben Thanh market right across the street. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated. We had breakfast at the restaurant every morning which was palatable. If you are looking for a good place to stay with friendly staff, a good restaurant and a great location plus you can also do some relaxation thru massage, this is your place. Oh and if you need some tours within HCM or Cu Chi Tunnel, you can ask them too.

Plus points -Great location, bang in city centre. Great value for money. Rooms clean with rooftop restuarant. Staff very helpful. Minus points - Was allocated room with a 'fake' outside window. Insisted on being moved to another room which they finally agreed but window almost pothole size. Think this is nature of building so be warned. Also a little confusion over breakfast times. Was told breakfast was between 6 and 10am but turned up at 9.30am to be told along with other guests that breakfast finished at 9.
Travel Tip - Avoid taxi's unless agreed price with Hotel! AB Tower a few streets away best place to see HMC at night but drinks are expensive. Also if you turn left out of Hotel and walk along a 300m or so you will come to the BBQ Garden Restaurant where food is cooked in centre of your table in garden surroundings. Also hotel is across road from Market place where you can buy your fake Rolex watches!

Very efficient check-in desk; however, their language skills limited to Vietnamese and passable English (doorman speaks Cantonese as well). Location is definitely spot-on: only 10 m from the BenThanh market, diagonally across the street. Everything else is walkable on a leisurely stroll. As the title says, room 307 has a faux window. It's sealed shut because it faces into the stairwell for emergency fire escape.

Pros: central location, very affordable, good views from rooftop lounge, free WiFi and awesome doorman.

Cons: fire drill on one day, room audit and inventory on next day, non working kettle (housekeeping gave extra bottles of drinking water), overabundance of decorative silk throw pillows, carpet smells moldy but not when air conditioning is turned on, and finally, fake lavender decorations.

Room Tip: Avoid any rooms ending in -07. It is sealed shut and faces the emergency exit stairwell.

I went in end November and the hotel I normally stay in when I'm in HCMC was not available this time round, so this was the alternative we got. It's still around the area I always stay though - District 1 - and this is a really good area to stay in if you want to experience more of the city. You can easily walk to many places, and getting to further places isn't that difficult - plenty of cabs and you can easily get on one from the more reputable taxi companies because this is a tourist area. Dong Khoi street is nearby and if you know how to walk or is feeling a little more adventurous, the whole area is really good for exploring. I was only there for 2 nights - it was just a weekend getaway for me and I was in HCMC because I had obligations to attend to - and the two nights were pretty good to me, so I would say this is value for money.

The room I had had a queen-sized bed but was quite tiny and had no windows. But there was free wi-fi in the rooms, the toilets and beds were pretty clean, and I liked that it actually smelled of lavender in my room. There's no bath in the toilet though - just a shower. Breakfast was okay, not much choice and some of the food weren't very nice - I thought the pancakes were horrible - but there were some good ones too.

The only thing I had against the hotel was the TV - connection was horrible, and on my second day during the afternoon, the connection kept getting cut off, so I would be watching TV for five minutes and it would get cut, only to have it come on 10 minutes later and the whole process repeats itself. There was even a mini blackout before I went out in the evening. Luckily, it only happened once those two days, and when I got back that night, 11 plus, it was fine again. My mum did comment though that the week leading to the weekend which I came - she came a few days before me for business - the TV had been fine, so it could have been just a once-off event. But over the years which I travelled to HCMC, black-outs are not uncommon, especially if you're travelling during the "summer months".

Otherwise not noteworthy. The hotel bills itself as a boutique hotel but in reality it is a business hotel. Breakfast was not memorable.

Lavender hotel was a great one night stay in HCMC - overall but definitely due to the cleanliness of the room and comfort of the queen sized bed.
Upon arrival via taxi, I was immediately greeted and documents checked and given a key to the pre-paid standard room (#207 no window). The room and bathroom looked spotless, clean, and inviting.
After some of the other hotels in other cities, I was very happy with my choice. The only downside was no window but for one night this was no problem for me especially given the window was there but painted in white so it gave the impression it was just closed.
Location was convenient to the market or just a short walk to Don Khoi area for upscale bars/ rest/shopping or to Pham Ngu Lao road just across 23/9 park for backpacker bars/restaurants due to the number of low end hotels.
Lastly, I enjoyed the breakfast on the 8th flr with some views of the city. Great choices for both American or Vietnamese. ( pancakes, toast, yogurt, cereal (2 choices), fruit, noodles, cheese, coffee, juice, etc)

Overall great stay at lavender hotel and would stay there again!

First impressions were good; the staff were polite and courteous. The foyer was clean and well maintained. We had a deluxe room and a standard. The deluxe was obviously better; more spacious, a good, large shower with good water pressure and it was very clean. The beds in both rooms were very comfortable and I was actually quite happy that there were no windows as it meant it was a haven away from the noise of the traffic on the streets of Sai Gon.

The internet in reception was good and wifi in the rooms was good too.

The room service was quick and efficient, the food was delivered promptly and everyone commented that the food was nice.

The location is very good. It is situated just a 2 minute walk from the market and at night, the market moves outside.

I would not have had any gripes but for the fact that it stated on in-room literature that breakfast finished at 10am, but when we went up at 9.30am, we were told it had finished at 9am that day. Returning to our room, I complained to Reception and they explained it had finished at 9am that day, but she would speak to the Manager and perhaps tomorrow it would finish at 10am. I explained that this would not benefit us as we were only stopping the night and we should have been told. The receptionist just laughed, reiterated that she would tell the Manager, said "Goodbye" in a friendly voice and hung up!

I felt that we could have at the very least been offered complimentary coffee and toast in our rooms. We had paid for a room with breakfast and it was hardly our fault they had finished the breakfast an hour earlier than was stated on their own literature. The other thing they might have done is to deduct something from our bill.

For this reason alone, I will look for another hotel when we return to Sai Gon next week.
