“Clean hotel right near the Ben Thanh Market”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2012

Great location immediately next to the Ben Thanh market. We were picked up from the airport by the hotel private car with a bottle of water and a face cloth each offered immediately to us. The hotel rooms are nice, clean, with a TV, AC and good beds. A spa is located on site with discounts offfered to guests but we didn't use the service. The included breakfast was basic but nice.

The only down side was the "city view" meant we could hear the loud street traffic all night through the thin panes of glass, despite being 6 floors up! It is also a little away from the tourist area but that didn't worry us.

The easy access to the Ben Thanh market and Night Market was the real highlight, especially for dinner!

The air conditioner never got cold, the sheets were dirty, the bathtub didn't hold water and the room seemed a bit dingy. Breakfast looks nice but is actually lacking in taste.

Not what we had hoped for after reading good reviews of the Tan Hai Long.

We asked the hotel to arrange an airport pick-up for us. They failed to do this so we were left stranded at HCMC Airport (with 2 increasingly grumpy kids.....not a good way to win over new guests).

We also asked them 2 weeks in advance to book us on the Mekong Express to Cambodia. They also failed completely to do this which meant we ended up on the coach we hadn't wanted arriving at the coach station where our next hotel wasn't waiting. Even when presented with the emails showing them agreeing on 3 occasions to do the things we had asked, they just shrugged, smiled and offered a particularly insincere apology.

When we finally made it to our room, more than a tad disgruntled, one of the beds wasn't even made.....

The hotel makes 2 stars because the breakfast was good and the room size was fine for 2 adults and 2 kids. But Tan Hai Long probably works best for a nice, simple booking. Don't ask them to do anything that seems complicated because they probably won't understand you and - much worse than that - will pretend to you that they have.

Room Tip: Aim high...noisy near the street

We stayed in the Tan Hai Long for 4 nights. Our first night was in a Deluxe room, which we didnt really like. It had a window, but it was on to a hallway, öpposite another window, and we couldnt see out clearly. However, we switched to a Junior Suite for the next three nights, whcih was very pleasant and comfortable, with two rooms overlooking the hustle and bustle of the Ben Thanh market. It had a couch and two (2!) windows. The superior rooms are much cheaper but dont have windows. Be aware that you may be able to get better prices direct from the hotel than through Agoda or one of hte booking sites. Our double Junior Suite was 75 USD a night in total and the Superior Room was 50 USD. The staff were pleasant and helpful. Because we'd made a mistake iwth our booking and booked for the night before we arrived, they gave us the first night in one of our rooms free of charge, and also upgraded us for our first night.

Room Tip: As above, if you can afford, get a junior suite. They're quiet and light with an interesting out...

We loved the breakfast. The staff was always courteous. When we report an issue, the front desk is always quick to send someone to the room to fix it. Whether they could fix the problem is another matter. But they always give their best.

We had a room facing the park - family size.
The problem was that the windows appear as if they're falling off the frame and cannot shut properly. The bellman came up and was very resourceful. He used newspaper to pad the openings.

We were there for 6 days and invariably, the internet connection kept getting cut off. We called the front desk what almost seems to be daily. They respond but I wish we didn't have to do this. One time, we wanted an ethernet cable to bypass the wifi. That took a little longer than needed.

The beds were comfortable.

It is a few steps out to Cho Ben Thanh, walking distance to a supermarket (sieu thi Tax). Around the corner is Pho 24. Basically, it is at a good location.

When we checked out, the clerk forgot to hand me all the invoices. I called back within 15 minute on our way to the airport and asked her to scan a copy and email it to me. I was very pleased that they got to it very promptly.

I am a little disappointed in the way they process the payment.

The price for the hotel was in US dollars. We wanted to charge all the expenses to our credit card. They said they had to charge it in Vietnamese Dong. This is ridiculous since they had no problem charging it in US dollars when we booked the room via the web. The problem with them insisting on charging in VN dong on the credit card is the double whammy on the currency exchange. I am from the US. So, for them to charge in VND, it's as if I have to buy US dollars at a higher rate 21500. Yet, after my credit card company receives the charge in VND, they then have to convert it back to USD using a lower rate 20700 . Therefore, this unnecessary round trip basically cost you 3.86%.

Room Tip: Saigon is a very noisy city. Check all windows to make sure that they shut properly especially if t...

The breakfast alone is worth staying for. But .... get downstairs early because it can get very crowded if there are tour buses over-nighting. The rooms tend to be rather small, and are better in the newer wing (there are two parts to the hotel and the newer section is accessed from the elevator in the dining area). We booked two tours through the tour staff and thought we got good value for money. The hotel staff in general was very helpful.
