The cha ca here is probably the best in Hanoi - the delicious oil is yellow with turmeric and the fish is firm fleshed. Cha ca comprises cubes of fish fried at the table with bunches of spring onions and herbs, then eaten in a bowl with noodles (bun). If you are up for powerful flavours, ask for mam tom with the dish - a knockout dip smelling of sweaty armpits made from fermented raw shrimps. it sounds disgusting, I know, but it's delicious.
The dish here is cha ca - nothing else is on the menu. The staff are pretty abrupt, verging on rude sometimes, but after all you aren't going here for refined dining. Just enjoy the food and beer. And don't drink too many of the latter as the stairs back down to street level are lethally steep.
