“Great value and super service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2010

Camellia is a great budget hotel in a great location. The girl at reception was so sweet and helpful and the rooms are very basic but good size for the price. The room was clean and quiet considering the busy surrounding streets. The showers weren't great but on the whole a really positive experience. We loved Hanoi

I stayed at the Camellia HaNoi hotel on Chan Cam street for 3 days and really enjoyed my stay. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and having a p.c in each room is a nice touch. The staff are really friendly and so helpful and were genuinely interested in how your day had gone. The location is great too

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room we had was a bit small but adequate, very clean and quiet. Breakfast at the hotel is a set menu and size is kinda small but ok to start the day.The hotel is in the old quarter and close to all major attractions (ab 5 mins from the lake)

Nicely decorated rooms, friendly, free internet, very clean. And the location! Even though it is located in the center, it's very quiet.

this hotel is like a building site, they are building a lift up the stair and the banging goes on day and night. Don't go there. (sept '08)

Read the review in one of the guidebooks which stated that it was the writer's "home away from home" when they are in Hanoi. Don't be fooled. This is a budget hotel alright, but somehow I think that for the money you can do better. Sure it's "family-run" but unless you speak Vietnamese you are ***. Only one of the family members knows any English and when he's not around it's very difficult to get any information. We got a room quickly enough (after calling the day before) and they put us on the 2nd floor right by the landing. It was so noisy that we moved up to the 3rd floor right away. This hotel has an "open air" atrium in the center so all the noise and cigarette smoke (everyone in this city appears to smoke) rises - you can't avoid it. The constant noise from cars and moto bikes honking echoed endlessly. Also, the loud rolling, metal security "door" that they constantly opened every five minutes (they shut it around 10 PM) to let guests in kept things loud and vibrant all night. I would not stay here again if you paid me. Dirty rooms with a filthy shower "mat" on the floor, terrible sheets that look like they hadn't been changed in years, horrible water pressure, etc. -- you could do worse, I imagine, but I'm not sure where.

I agree with the previous reviewer. We had been staying before at another minihotel (Tien Thuy) which was less than ideal. Chan Cam street is less crowded than Hang Thung, more peaceful and relaxed. Of course, here is yet another of those uncanny, small, narrow buildings to be found in Hanoi or Saigon but there is a family atmosphere at Camellia, which means more smiles and better help & advice from the owners and staff. Finding a restaurant nearby can be a bit more tricky
- there are plenty of them but those tend to be either "Western" and (comparatively!) more expensive, or thoroughly "popular" and requiring
some familiarity with local standards. However ten minutes of leisurely walk will lead you to Ta Hien street with a good panel. Basic continental breakfast is available (let the reception know a bit in advance). A quiet, more than decent choice, very good value for this central area.
