“Great fun!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2010

This is the place to stay in Hanoi. The place is huge and you're guaranteed to meet people you've met elsewhere whilst travelling. Their bar is a lot of fun, and the staff make sure everyone there is having a great time. Rooms are clean and safe.

Simply MUST do their trip to halong bay. It's more expensive than the other trips, but worth every penny. Make sure you do the full 3 day trip, as the night on the island is amazing.

A little bit pricey maybe, but worth every penny. this place is great for meeting people, booking trips and their friendly staff.
If I went back to Hanoi, I would definately stay here.

My friend and I stayed in a female dorm room after a HORRIBLE night at the $3 bed a night place. It was such a welcome change! The first thing we noticed that there were a lot of people. There are so many that they operate three buildings spaced very close to each other! The next thing that we noticed was that it smelled and looked clean inside! There were people gathered watching a movie, and I felt like I was back in my university days. It's near the higher-end part of town, close to St. Joseph's Cathedral (within 10 minute walk?). It's a bit expensive for a dorm bed, but I think it was worth it for its location and atmosphere!

This place is an oasis of a hostel in a country full of cheap hotels. A few basics first, yes it is possible to get cheaper hotels than the rates here. However, me and my travelling partner found that no matter where we travelled in Vietnam over the 6 weeks we were there we continually thought back to Hanoi Backpackers and how much we'd like there to be an identical one wherever we were. Staying in cheap hotels gets a bit soulless after a while, and meeting fellow travellers is what backpacking is all about. This place has a fantastic social environment, with everyone happy to have a chat about their travels & what they have been doing.

Staff are great and, most of them are Vietnamese and there are always a few expats around to explain things so you can understand them. Bars are reasonably priced, and despite the early closing hour there are pubs around just down the street. The free breakfast is supplemented by an on duty cook if you feel like something a bit more substantial, and the streets surrounding the hostel are full of resturaunts and street stalls selling everything from Pho to Pizzas. Free internet in the lobby is a plus.

We stayed for a week and a half, and felt safe and secure the whole time, unlike our stays in some cheap hotels further south. Did the Halong Bay tour and Sapa tour through the hostel as well, spending New Years cruising Halong Bay was a unique experience.

In summary - Awesome. Do it.

Hanoi Backpackers Hostel is comfortable and clean, with incredible tours, but ambitious prices for dorm beds. Rooftop bar is very tame, closes at 9:30 (same as the bar downstairs). Price for services such as laundry are more expensive than most, and charge bigger commission for taxis than most. Tours are also very expensive.

Having said that, staff there are very very helpful, and always smiling. Met some great people here, but its always a hit and miss just like any other hostel. Great all-day breakfast menu, safe bag storage, reliable internet stations and wifi. Very helpful indexed map provided by reception. They have interesting tours that are more relevant to a lot of backpackers. The Snake Village tour was fun, got the chance to hold a snake and drink snake blood and snake wine, and eat different snake dishes. The more adventurous people got to cut open the snake, rip its heart out and eat it. We also went on the Halong Bay tour, we got to stay on Castaway Island, and the hosts who live there are really laid back guys. There was kayaking, water tubing, wake boarding and rock climbing, which were lots of fun.

10-15 minute walk to the lake and central area.

Hanoi Backpackers is a great place to meet people. We stayed different dorm rooms each time we stayed. They were clean but only one bathroom for 8 people. Lockers under the bed for your backpacks. The location is good and the staff are helpful. We all booked the Halong Bay and castaway island trip through the hostel which was fantastic fun. The location is good and only a 10 minute walk to the lake. The burgers on the roof top bar were very good.
