“Excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

this is a cafe-style eatery, not really a restaurant but the food is top notch. Ms Thuy was a runner up in Vietnam's MasterChef competition and it shows. The pho had a depth of flavour we've not experienced elsewhere [the chicken version tasted like it had roasted chicken stock in it] and both the fried spring rolls and the fresh were paper thin, delicate and tasty.
Service is friendly and pretty efficient - if you're in the area, it's worth stopping by. In fact, if you're in a five-mile radius it's definitely worth it!

“Yummy sticky rice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

We are 2 canadian mature couples travelling through Vietnam. We went to this restaurant as it was on trip advisor. One of our friends does not eat vietnamese food and loved the snitzel meal. Atmosphere is casual, premises are clean. All our food was hot , very yummy, served quickly, and cheaper than most places we ate, as we always had to find a place that also served some american food. Recommend the fish special or chicken with sticky rice. Only negative, they do not serve wine, just beer, which was the very cheap. We would highly recommend this restaurant and will return if ever back in Hanoi.

Dear Guest,

thank you very much for your nice words!
We took your and other guest's comments to heart, and the new menu contains now also red and white wine from Dalat (Vietnam). We might add more wines, depending on our guests wishes.

Talking about the new menu (i.e. from tomorrow on): "On popular demand", the vegetarian section has been expanded with several new dishes. We will now have also more daily specials that are not in the normal menu.

See you again in Hanoi!

“It's "ok"”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2014

Nothing too special about this place. So funny how trip advisor ratings are hit or miss. The portion sizes are nice and the food is good quality and taste, but it's definitely not "cheap". I think the price is just about right where it should be for the portions you get. In Thailand you'll find cheaper food but they'll skimp on portion size so I guess this place is right on the mark, but not cheap.
The atmosphere is bland and it definitely lives up to the name which had "family" in the title. It feels like a place you go to feed the kids and mom and dad with a good hearty meal for a fair price, not a place to bring a date or to have a few drinks with dinner.
The area the restaurant is in seems cool so if you're hungry and wanted to pop in for a good meal before going out this could be a good option.
I ordered the special and while it tasted good and was definitely constructed with nice ingredients, it was a little too close to room temperature for my liking...
Also 20.000 dong for a Hanoi
Beer is not very cheap, kthanxbye

Dear Guest,

thank you for your frank review and that you liked the taste and portion size of our food.

Actually, we never wanted to compete on price. From the outset, we wanted to stay affordable (“reasonable prices”) also for our Vietnamese guests and for families with a smaller budget. Besides that, since we are in one of Hanoi’s “backpacker’s streets”, low prices are important. The tag “cheap” was given to us by guests who compared our prices with those of other similar restaurants in Hanoi, not with some places somewhere in Thailand (or even the Vietnamese country side).

Since low prices are obviously very important for you, we don’t really understand why you chose our most expensive beer and one of the most expensive dishes, the “Cha Ca”, and not some of the lower priced choices. If you would look around in Hanoi, you would find that the going price for the “Cha Ca” in other restaurants is 150 to 160 kVND (compared to our current 90 kVND). In fact, we had Vietnamese customers who thought that with our low price of that dish, we would use “substandard fish” and were pleasantly surprised with what they then got delivered. They come now again and again. Or, again “comparing apples with apples”, we would be interested to hear from you in which restaurant in Hanoi you can get a “big Tiger” beer for less than the 10 kVND as we are selling it currently.
But, as I said, rock bottom prices are not what we are mainly concerned with. A happy “this is the best food that we had in Vietnam”, as we hear it again and again, is a priceless reward in itself for a chef who puts her heart everyday into her cooking.

You say that the temperature of the food “was a little too close to room temperature for my liking”. Well, Vietnamese eat the Bun (“rice vermicelli”) in this dish usually “cold”, i.e. at room temperature. We are one of the few places where the Bun are heated before getting served, to better fit to Western expectations. If a guest wants to have it hotter, (s)he is always encouraged to notify us. It is a quick and easy thing to put the whole pot for a few seconds into the microwave oven.

Finally, we tend to agree with you regarding your “So funny how trip advisor ratings are hit or miss.” The only question is, whether the vast majority of our guests and reviewers who consider us as “high quality food and service at low prices” are really all a “miss”.

Have a nice stay in Hanoi,

Stefan Probst
