“Not great but good for the price.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

First off, for 17 bucks a night I shouldn't complain. Very clean rooms with beautiful wood furniture, floors, wall, ceiling. Staff were friendly and helpful with all my questions and needs. Great breakfast with typical western fare. TV was an old CRT unit, not the big LED as advertised, but who comes to Vn to watch TV right? Fridge and heater suddenly stopped working so they moved me downstairs one floor where my city view became a nice view of some lady's kitchen. I shopped around for tours and such, the guy at the tour desk here definitely has better deals and is not so pushy with guests like at other hotels I keep reading about. Good location, 5 minute walk to Hoen Kiem lake. They were pretty cool about unlocking the doors and helping me to my room after a pretty intense new years celebration. Recommended, will stay here again.

Stayed at this hotel over christmas 2012. Got a double room for $15 on Agoda which is amazing value given the quality of the rooms, service and breakfast buffet. Perfect location, quiet and helpful staff.

Room Tip: Book on Agoda

Great hotel & location. Walking distance from Hoan Kim Lake, Old Quarter etc. Rooms were spacious & clean, comfy beds, funky antique wooden furniture & lighting that gave the place a bit of character. Free wifi but connection not so good. Friendly & helpful staff who were also able to book us on an amzing 3 day boat cruze in Ha Long Bay. Would recommend to anyone who is looking to stay in Hanoi for a few days.

The Nam Hai hotel at 55 Duong Thanh Street in the old part of Hanoi is a luxurious refuge from the traffic and hustle and bustle of a city that rarely seems to go to bed, let alone sleep. It has air-conditioning and fans to counter the heat and humidity of the warm weather, a luxurious massage shower to wrinkle away the aches and pains of trying to cross roads, haggle and find places to eat and a comfy large bed to dream of doing it all again tomorrow. An interesting and tasty Asian breakfast can be substituted for the usual Western fare and the staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms in the front have a balcony.

I booked during what appears to be a constant Agoda.com flash sale, so this is a great deal for a fantastic two star in a quiet area west of Hoan Kiem Lake free of the pushiness of the more lively backpacker area north of the lake. It's only a short 10 minute walk to get to the livelier nightlife area, but I find the Vietnamese food in this area much authentic and better.

The rooms are completely carved wood with strong a/c, fan, English channel TV (some rooms have a plasma screen), and refrigerator. Some even include a desktop computer hooked up to the internet. The bathrooms have fancy showers or baths that hint at Western style boutique luxury until you use them and reveal their Chinese manufacturing that may not work. Bathtubs could use a good scrubbing. The staff are always smiling and helpful without being overly pushy about tours. They've always been extra helpful with our bags, including strapping them on our motorcycles for us, and are courteously full of small talk at breakfast. They even opened up the security gates for us when we showed up without warning off the train from Sapa at 5 AM and let us have our room early. The breakfast buffet changes from day to day and has a decent selection, bottled water is included on the first day.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2012 via mobile

Stayed there for 4 nights but we didnt try their breakfast considering that we were surrounded by a lot of tasty street treats.

You'd be easily deceived by the narrow facade of the hotel, but once you get onto one of the upper floors you will be amazed at how deep it is. Hotel was said to be recently renovated, so rooms were generally clean and new, and spacious too. The bathroom was a tad small, but the shower cubicle had sauna and jacuzzi functions which were pretty cool.

Service was good. Without any request we were given a room that overlooked the busy street, which could get a little noisy at times, but at least better than having to face a wall or a back alley. When the air conditioner in our room suddenly stopped working, we were immediately moved to another room directly below the old room without any questions asked.

The hotel's location is very convenient in my opinion. It is not that close to Sword Lake, as many hotels claim as their advantage, but who goes there everyday anyways. It is somewhat between the old quarter and the more modern part of Hanoi and there is a lot of nice street food around.

We didnt really use any service in the hotel, nor did we stay in much, so that was it for my experience at Nam Hai.

P.s., the WIFI can be a problem, as there was only connection if we stood next to the door of our room.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2012

We stayed for four nights at the Nam Hai hotel. We moved here from another guesthouse within Vietnam and were impressed with the standard of the rooms and service.

We booked through Agoda (which was a few dollars cheaper than the rates we were quoted when enquiring at the hotel itself!). The room itself was big, clean and comfortable with an awesome shower and a two way heater/air conditioner (the heater came in very useful!). But I guess you would expect these features when paying $35 a night. The first room we were given had some dirt on the sheets, which we notified reception of. We were happy to remain in the room and for the sheets to be replaced with clean ones, but instead we were offered an upgrade to a room with a balcony! The only slight disappointment was the breakfast, which wasn't very extensive!

The hotel is also located in old quarter, practically opposite the Galleria and only a short walk to the lake.

We also booked a day trip through the hotel to Halong Bay, reasonably priced at $35. The trip was awesome and well worth the money, particularly when you read through the horror stories on the various forums. Our $35 included everything (minibus to and from Halong Bay (3 hours each way), lunch, Kayaking, admission to Halong and the caves, guide), the highlight being a nice meal aboard our boat.

Highly recommended!
