“Excellent museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

A very interesting museum. The highlight for me was the outdoor exhibition, which consisted of reconstructed houses from many of the minority tribes. The indoor exhibition was ok but not as well organised and the information not quite as comprehensive as the Women's Museum. A new building for the museum is nearing completion and the quality of the museum will go up a step when this opens.

“Educational and Enjoyable cultural option!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

This museum is both indoors and outdoors. Very informative about all the peoples of Vietnam and shares their vast history in physical form. Very informative and interesting and laid out in such a way that you feel you have visited the past.

“A great venue - add to your itinerary!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

This place was like the hidden gem of Hanoi for us!
I didn't expect much but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I learnt about the people of Vietnam and their customs.

The best part - it was the first time/place in Hanoi that we saw the Vietnamese having fun and smiling. Many of the staff were young (perhaps university students?) - they spoke great English and worked hard to involve tourists in the many cultural/historical activities on show. One of my highlights in Hanoi - so thank you!

“Most interesting museum”

Brilliant reconstructions of the homes of Vietnamese tribes. You can climb in them and walk around. Definitely worth a visit!

“Interesting insights. Recommended. Don't miss the water puppet show.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013 via mobile

Although a little out of town (taxi approx 1500 dong from old town) it is worth the effort. The museum is spilt in 2 parts , an indoor exhibition area with primarily costumes & exhibitions of local culture and an outdoor area with reconstructed buildings in the style of various ethnic groups. Both are worth visiting.

The outdoor area has the bonus of water puppet shows (at 10,1130, 230 & 4 pm when i visited) These are in daylight and very authentic in the sense that the majority of the audience is Vietnamese who are clearly enjoying the show. It was very noticeable that the majority of tour guides hurry their groups past the water puppet show obviously on the promise they will be attending the Thang Long Water puppet theatre (see separate review). Its their loss. The museum show is a lot more comfortable, more relaxed , and has better photo opportunities although it is a little less polished.

Whilst the museum is not the best iv seen of its type. its certainly not the worst and is well worth the effort to get to. The water puppet show(s) is/are a huge bonus.
