Having stayed at a few hotels in Vietnam, I found the staff at this hotel to be the most welcoming. Always smiling and happy to help. A special mention goes to the hotel manager Dong Do. When I needed help during my stay he was excellent. To all travellers, if you can. One evening, try a street beer with the locals for 10p one of the best experiences in Vietnam. If I return to Vietnam I will stay again at this hotel. James, London, UK

Hotel was very clean and everything worked.
A good buffet breakfast – Asian & European - also serves excellent coffee.
Reception staff spoke good English and did not press for selling tours but had a range on offer if you needed them. There was never any shortage of help with luggage if required but at the same time you were not hassled.
The hotel is very central only a couple of minutes walk from Sword Lake (Hoan Kiem Lake) and an ideal location for a walking tour of the old quarter and close to night market with plenty of well priced eateries near by.
Initially the hotel does not look much from the street but this is because it is typical of the buildings here very narrow but deep - see photo - don't be put off, inside is a different story. There are 7 floors but there is a working lift; also a bar and free Wi-Fi.
I had a triple room so a lot of space - TV (BBC and CNN). The room had an electronic safe, A/C, Fridge and a couple of bottles of free water. Complimentary fruit was also provided in the room.
Bath & shower with plenty of hot water and there was also a hairdryer.
The service was exceptional - they even provided my travelling companion with a birthday cake. I assume they did this from his registration details because no one had told them.

When I am back in Hanoi I will certainly stay here again.

We visited Hanoi in March 2013 and spent a total of four nights at the Hong Ngoc Tonkin Hotel. It is located in the Old City is just a few minutes walk to Hoan Kiem Lake and many other places of interest - perfect!
The rooms are clean and comfortable. Good beds, lots of hot water, good WiFi.
The entire staff here is happy and very friendly. Dong Do Van, the hotel manager and Phong, at the front desk are simply amazing! Their English is good and they helped us with everything from getting us taxi's to arranging our tours to Sapa and Halong Bay and even airline tickets!
Will definitely stay here again on our next trip!

This review is also about the Hong Ngoc chain in general. Due to a mix up with our bookings at the Hong Ngoc Dynastie, located a street or so away, we were taken to the Hong Ngoc Tonkin by taxi and given a suite for the price of a deluxe room because of the inconvenience of having to change hotels. We were very impressed with this sort of customer service. The suite was a very large room at the front of the hotel, with a balcony onto the street. While the hotel is located in the heart of the old quarter and so very close to everything, windows were double-glazed so street noise was not a problem at all. The room contained lots of heavy, carved furniture and somewhat surprisingly a huge 1400 mm or so high ornamental plate on a stand. However because of the size of the room, furnishings did not appear out of place. Both the bedroom and the bathroom were very clean.
The buffet breakfast has a good range of food which was regularly replenished. Staff in all areas of the hotel were friendly and helpful.

The location is excellent, but the room is a bit worn out. I had booked this hotel because I had thought that they had a gym (or exercise room), and it turns out that this was at another site (like 10 minutes away). The bathroom had a bath tub so that was good. Breakfast is OK.
