“John McCain's wartime digs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

We Americans have heard so much about prison conditions during the Vietnamese War that we had to see for ourselves. The tour is easily self guided with signs in English. It can't be called a fun visit, but it is moving and powerful. English guides are available, but be prepared to hear plenty of government propaganda.

“Interesting and well presented!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

This is a well executed presentation of the history of hanoi hilton.
Plenty to see, lots of information and a sprinkle of propaganda too!

Spent 2 hours here, absorbed it all and then downloaded Banged Up Abroad Vietnam which features Senator John McCain telling his side of the story.

“An important location to visit, but so darned biased”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

We wanted to see the famed Hanoi Hilton, but we did not expect a museum so full of government propaganda that basically absolved the current government of all wrongdoing. I know that the communist Vietnamese government runs the museum, so they get to tell whatever story they want to tell, but they really took a pass on any accountability.

I have been to the genocide museum in Cambodia, and it was horrible, but it was much more honest. I know the Khmer Rouge isn't running Cambodia now, so that's probably the difference, but Hoa Lo was a joke.

“An insight into a dark time.”

This place really hits a nerve and gives you a true insight into the conditions the prisoners faced. Well worth a visit.

“Hoa Lo Prison”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

We felt as though we had to do something 'touristy' during our stay in Hanoi so decided to visit the Hoa Lo Prison - very informative and makes for a good hour and a half trip. They have done the museum out so that it replicates what the prison would have been like and it feels fairly authentic. Worth a visit if you have some spare time.
