“Quiet Sanctuary from the Bustle of Hanoi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

Of course do all of the normal tourist things in Hanoi but then take a leisurely stroll west on Phan Binh Phung down the refreshingly wide cobbled sidewalk away from the old city center. If you follow it past the Presidential Palace and continue on until it turns into Huang Hoa Tham Rd, you get to the Botanical Gardens. It's true, as others have pointed it out, it's more of a city park than gardens, but it's a great place to relax and mingle with the locals.

“Quite clean park”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

It is a beautiful park with a lake and a small Pagoda. There is no reason to call it a botanical garden. The park is clean and well maintained. Very good place for a leisurely walk away from the busy and noisy Hanoi city. Not for tourists with a tight schedule. Nothing special about this park. May be about half an hour on your way to to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum or any other attraction close by.

“A little quiet among the bustle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012 via mobile

His was a pleasant surprise and easy to get too. No flowers here and plenty of greenery around the lake. Lots of exercisers and games going on w the locals. A few snack food vendors. With a stroll with a cup of coffee and a book or journal just to get away for a moment. In summer I'm sure it's even prettier

“Why is it called botanical gardens”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

When we went there we first thought we were in the wrong place. We expected something like the botanical gardens in Singapore or at least like those you find in Europe, France or Germany. Here it is a simple park with trees, very little explanations, hardly any flowers.

“A pleasant escape from the traffic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2012

As with the majority of nature attractions in Vietnam the botanical gardens is acceptable but has the potential to be so much better. The gardens are reasonably large and the shade afforded on a hot day, like on the day I visited, was appreciated but it didn't really have the feel of a botanical garden - where are the names, the sections for different types of plant, a recommended walk through to appreciate the best they have to offer?

The gardens need:
- To allow the visitors to step on the grass (this equally applies in most parts of Hanoi)
- To maintain areas such as the bridge over to the pigeon (dove?) houses
- To improve the enclosures for the monkeys and the peacocks (please!)
- To make the children's play area safe or just remove it altogether (honestly this was like something created by people that want to hurt children)
- To have a map or signs to plants of interest

Also... why on earth is there graffiti still on the sculptures - some of the graffiti could easily be painted over and I'm sure there'd be less chance of attracting more.

If staying in Hanoi for some time it's well worth visiting the gardens just to enjoy the relative peace and a cool drink underneath some trees by the grass. Keep your expectations fairly low and you may not be disappointed.
