We stayed at the Zephyr only one night, but were pleased in that our tour operator had arranged an early check-in (5:00 a.m. following our return train from Sa Pa). The check-in was quick and the room was very nice and very spacious (my wife just commented last night about wanting a bed like we had at the Zephyr). We were happy to find that the entire room had been re-made and all toiletries and complimentary water re-freshed when we returned in the afternoon.
The location is absolutely wonderful and is very convenient to many things. Walk a short distance and join the locals in their morning Tai Chi and other excercise routines next to the lake, in the evening there are plenty of places to eat and to shop around in.
The breakfast buffet was good. The food was not spectacular, but it was tasty, fresh and filling - just about what you expect across Viet Nam. I really liked that just off the lobby they had a pastry counter - just perfect for a quick treat to take back to your room.
I can see that the front desk help may come off as not being the most friendly - kind of arrogant knowing that they have a posh job in a tourist class hotel, but the bell men were very helpful with luggage, and were even willing, no, actually happy to go out on seperate occassions to purchase medication and cell phone minutes.
