“Mixed Review/Jack Hammer Noise At Night”

Guoman Hanoi

May 14, 2007

Agree with the previous reviewers that the Guoman's location and comfort & cleanliness are a bit above average. The breakfast buffet is a bit thin but still adequate.

Front desk staff --- I totally agree --- are surly and mean but that is sometimes part of Viet Nam in general so one has to tune it out. Vietnamese cannot come close to Thais in terms of outstanding hotel customer service.

The really bad thing about the Guoman was that on the backside of the hotel is a HUGE construction site not 50m from all of the rooms on the hotel's back side.

When I stayed there, there was enormous noise --- workers "speaking" to each other on bullhorns, jack hammers being used frequently to bust up cement, rebar/iron bars being tossed between floors.

The frightening thing was that the construction went ALL NIGHT and this had been going on, according to the competent Malay Asst GM of the hotel, for 9 months! The hotel management had tried to reach an accomodation regarding construction hours but the Hanoi government apparently doesn't take into account what the Guoman's needs are.

At the end of my stay, they discounted one of my two nights by 15% as they had recently put in double-glazed windows on that side of the building to lower the noise. A hibernating bear could not have slept even with those upgraded windows.

I stayed here for three nights in Dec 2006. Although there were no major problems, I would not stay here again.

Positives:
- The bed was quite comfortable.
- The gym had well-maintained, up-to-date equipment, although the temperature in the room was considerably higher than I would have liked.
- There are good restaurants within walking distance.
- The hotel is quite convenient to the Hoa Lo Prison (aka the “Hanoi Hilton”), which was well worth seeing.
- The breakfast buffet had good, varied selections, including Asian selections.
- The room was kept clean.

Negatives:
- The staff at this hotel were, by far, the most unhelpful and unfriendly of those I encountered during my month traveling in SE Asia; in fact, they were the only unhelpful and unfriendly staff I encountered during that month. I overheard them being rude to other guests, and when I asked at the cashier station, politely, if it would be possible to change a 100-dong bill into smaller dong notes, I was told quite rudely that no, the hotel had no cash (patently untrue as I observed people paying bills and other charges in cash, which was going directly into an accessible till drawer). Front-desk staff, cashier staff, and restaurant staff all tended to be unfriendly. I had no interaction with maids or maintenance staff so can’t comment on those.
- Because of the heavy, chaotic Hanoi traffic, it was difficult and unpleasant to walk anywhere from the hotel, other than late in the evening or early in the morning. Next time I would stay closer to Hoan Kiem Lake.
- The air-conditioning in the hotel appeared not to be functioning during my stay; common areas were warm, the fitness center was roasting, and turning down the A/C in my room had no effect.
- The hotel is very popular with American tour groups, which may be a positive or a negative for you.
- The third night of my stay, construction on a neighboring building began at about 9 PM and continued well into the night, making it difficult to sleep (not the hotel’s fault, of course).

In summary, although this hotel is clean and well-equipped with amenities, because of the less-than-pleasant staff and the location I would choose a different hotel in Hanoi next time.

On a multi-week business trip to Vietnam, including about 3 weeks in Hanoi, stayed at Guoman.

Clean, safe, well cleaned, well maintained. Nice bathrooms, greeting basket of fruit. Good, central location, near good restaurants.

A colleague told me that he made friends with a local at a nightclub and when she visited him at his hotel, the front desk charged USD40 to 'register' her.

Having tried about 6 hotels in Hanoi, easily the best value for money for the business traveler. Would it cut it in Amsterdam? No. But, Hanoi is not Amsterdam.

The hotel is actually rated 4 stars. We stayed there for 1 night for a business trip. It looked beautiful and quaint and the rooms were big and clean. Overall experience was good, except that my room had no indoor slippers. The view was nothing to speak of as well. The buffet breakfast in the morning offered a very small and limited choice. The bed was very comfortable and though we got smoking rooms, there was absolutely no smell at all. Service was average. Will recommend for short visits.

“A Beautiful Hotel”

Guoman Hanoi

Stayed in the Guoman Hanoi for four nights. it was a beatiful hotel with an excellent location. The rooms were quite large, clean and new and the hotel was very stylish from the outside. The lobby was very big and nice but one small problem was that the staff were rarely able to break down large $US bills. The breakfast buffet was absolutely delicious with loads of exotic fresh fruit and juices and a tasty selection of hot food. Overall i thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Guoman and it was in an awesome location just down the street from the 'Hanoi Hilton' and a short walk or cyclo or Honda to many other attractions around Hanoi.
