Agree with the previous reviewers that the Guoman's location and comfort & cleanliness are a bit above average. The breakfast buffet is a bit thin but still adequate.
Front desk staff --- I totally agree --- are surly and mean but that is sometimes part of Viet Nam in general so one has to tune it out. Vietnamese cannot come close to Thais in terms of outstanding hotel customer service.
The really bad thing about the Guoman was that on the backside of the hotel is a HUGE construction site not 50m from all of the rooms on the hotel's back side.
When I stayed there, there was enormous noise --- workers "speaking" to each other on bullhorns, jack hammers being used frequently to bust up cement, rebar/iron bars being tossed between floors.
The frightening thing was that the construction went ALL NIGHT and this had been going on, according to the competent Malay Asst GM of the hotel, for 9 months! The hotel management had tried to reach an accomodation regarding construction hours but the Hanoi government apparently doesn't take into account what the Guoman's needs are.
At the end of my stay, they discounted one of my two nights by 15% as they had recently put in double-glazed windows on that side of the building to lower the noise. A hibernating bear could not have slept even with those upgraded windows.
