“Full Service Hotel with Great Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

The Daewoo remains one of the premiere hotels in Hanoi and -- like its competitors -- is staffed with some of the most helpful and friendly professionals in the region. While the rooms are quite standard, the overall facilities are comprehensive with many dining options.

Very helpful staff throughout the hotel, especially so at reception and concierge desk. The business meeting facilities were very good, and again professionally staffed. Technicians knowledgeable and very helpful. The bedrooms are excellent, a good size and well equipped, though a little dated. The restaurant on the ground floor and the adjacent coffee and bar areas very good. The rooftop bar less so.

I choose this hotel cuzz it’s closest to our office branch. The room is flawless, free internet, spacious, bed’s very comfy and room’s sound proofed – if I don’t set alarm I would have waken up late every morning. Breakfast is super, so salute to the chef’s team. They don’t change the menu but with the very wide selections of food, I tried different menu every day of my total 4 nights stay and most important is they tasted good too! The hotel is at Ba Dinh district, about 45 mins from airport. Don’t bother too book the hotel’s airport transfer cuzz the price is crazy. I took Airport Taxi offered by staff using tags inside the airport for USD20 without bargaining; I’m pretty sure I can get cheaper (USD15) if I did. The hotel is far (about 15 mins drive) from the down town area where tourist attraction and shopping area concentrates (e.g., old quarters). Depending on the taxi you choose, expect to pay around USD5 from hotel to downtown and USD3 back to the hotel. Although using meters, the taxis at hotel’s taxi rank (with Daewoo Hotel printed across the car) is more expensive (both start price and per km rate) than the other taxi I picked up from the street. Better take taxi from the street, and my preference is the green taxi (Ma Linh); smaller and therefore cheaper rate. The hotel has a free shuttle service from hotel to downtown (one trip only) but sadly they don’t put the shuttle schedule in the room. I called to the extension written in the room service card for this service but the staff can’t speak English so I gave up. Only when checking out I learnt that the schedule leaflet is available from the concierge. The staff English speaking skills are limited which seems to be a common problem in the city but should not be in a 5 star hotel. Horrified with some of the reviews about some of tour operators for Halong Bay river cruise, I booked a one-day Halong Bay trip through the hotel, as I expected that they would refer me to a reputable operator. The hotel offered me two choices; tour organized by their tour-desk staff or one organized directly by external travel agent. I chose the latter because the former was slow in responding my emails (same story with the reservation-desk). Unfortunately the tour and the service turned out to be disappointing (I will cover in separate review). I will only come back here for business trip/ paid by company.

Room Tip: internet is free but club floor offered wifi; other than club floor must use internet cable.

Although now somewhat dated the Hanoi Daewoo Hotel elegantly symbolises a bygone era with its magnificent architecture and extensive art collection.
Rooms are comfortable and spacious. Very efficient business centre. Excellent spa facilities. Even a barber with a memorable neck massage.
Very good breakfast buffet. Freindly, attentive staff. Free wifi in the lobby appreciated.

Room Tip: Request a lake view

Just went there for an invited event dinner, that included a typical cultural and musical show.. The hotel looks really fancy and deserves fully the 5*; the food was just magic; especially the Vietnamese and Asian options; the songs and musical instruments of Vietnam are a sweet invitation to the local culture.

I agree with some reviews which state that the Hanoi Daewoo Hotel cannot be called a 5-star hotel, mainly because it is old and in need of refurbishment. For one thing, there are stains on the carpet and upholstery. However, I like the character of the place, with its architecture and tasteful furnishings. The rooms are nice and spacious. The mattress is not that soft, but the pillows are. Guests have free access to the sauna -- and it is fantastic for a hotel sauna! In the men's sauna, there are 3 jacuzzis, a steam room and a dry sauna. The views of the lake from the top floors of the hotel are great. The buffet at the Promenade was good, but the ala carte menu at the Silk Road is a bit pricey. The main issue with the hotel is the location, since it is away from the city center, and it can take some time to get there with Hanoi traffic. However, the service staff are all nice and friendly.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view of the lake.

We stayed two nights at the Hanoi Daewoo and had no complaints. The tooms are spacious and clean. The beds are a little hard but we all had great sleeps. The pool is huge and for some reason not well used. Pool service is basic but all we really needed was a large dry towel and there were plenty of those available. The fitness facitly is also pretty basic but all the equipment was in good working order and the facility was well ventilated. The hi-lite, however, was the breakfast buffer. The hotel offered the best breakfast of our entire two week tour of Vietnam. Everyone in our group raved about the breakfast! Free wi-fi in the lobby was appreciated. The hotel could use a bit of updating but the service, staff, and food were great.
