“Typical Sofitel style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013

The Sofitel Plaza is located in central Hanoi, although is a long-ish walk from the Old Quarter (or a short cab ride unless the cabbie decides to take you for a ride - literally - to charge you a few extra thousand Dong). The location is fabulous though - the view from the rooms overlooking the lake is unparalleled. On a clear day (of which we were fortunate to have two), you have a breathtaking view of Hanoi. The roof-level bar has the same view - just about worth the rather expensive price of drinks.

The rooms are a good size with spacious (for the Sofitel chain) bathrooms. The toiletries are beautiful (Lanvin) and the amenities are what you would expect. The mini-bar prices are outrageous, but the room service prices quite reasonable. The beds are comfortable and come with a good choice of pillows (although I insist on bringing my own these days!).

Breakfast is too chaotic - the dining room isn't very big and the egg station not as efficient as some other places I've stayed recently. The coffee is good! Plunger coffee for each table - a nice touch.

Check-in/out was very efficient; lobby staff very friendly.

The hotel's immediate environs are not too tourist-friendly, although the streets are perfectly safe to explore to get a bit of local colour.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a lake view.

Stayed here prior to a group tour. Paid the extra money to stay on the club floors with access to the club lounge. Excellent service, excellent rooms and excellent food. Has a nice view over the lakes and a pool with a retractable roof.

Also had massages while at the hotel and they were very well priced.

No complaints here and all the staff were extremely friendly and helpful

We stayed three nights at the Sofitel Plaza, the room was immaculate with stunning views over the West Lake! It was a short taxi ride away from the main attractions of the city but I was certainly glad we had the view we had from our room! The Summit Bar was the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail over looking the Lake from the decked terrace! The staff were very helpful indeed which made our stay very comfortable.

This hotel was perfect in every way. From attentive, responsive and extremely obliging staff to the room cleanliness. Free WiFi is provided in rooms and lobby with great reception In each areas. The food served at the rooftop bar and lobby bars was excellent (I had the Demi-baguette with wine lunch deal). The spa service was second to none and this price was very reasonable for a massage in such a luxury hotel. The breakfast was excellent and pleased Eastern, Western and Asian palates. The hotel location is superb...just a 20 minute walk to the Old Quarter, or a AUS$3-4 cab ride...well worth it on the hot, hazy and humid days. Given the very affordable price point, I highly recommend this hotel for business or leisure travel.

I could and would not fault this hotel: its location, its staff, its rooms, our entire customer experience from beginning to end was fantastic. The hotel isnt located as far away from the city centre as I initially thought ($5 in a taxi, make sure to get the proper licensed cabs, not the smaller hatchbacks). Reception staff were friendlyand welcoming with great English. We were offered an upgrade but for something like $50 extra per night we chose not to, and still secured rooms on the 18th floor with breathtaking views across the city.
The rooms had everything you'd expect from a 5 star hotel - the bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in. Bathroom was wonderful (though we did notice that the toiletries were not L'Occitane as was advertised when we booked). Comfy robes, slippers, great shower, and really thorough daily cleaning and turn-down service.
The pool was AMAZING - huge, cool, refreshing - just what you need to escape the humidity of Hanoi - theres also a really well equipped gym (with classes) and spa facilities. The rooftop bar offers sensational sunset views across the lake, though there is limited space outside so get there early. There were great 3 for 2 offers on cocktails when we stayed. The buffet restaurant was quite expensive for what it was, we ate in the bar area and the service was impeccable and the food was magnificent
On a final note - I really must compliment the patience and helpfulness of the night porter who came to our assistance after a potentially hideous situation involving one too many late-night cocktails, a bath running with the plug in and a guest locked out of the room because of a faulty keycard was averted at the last minute. We cannot thank you enough!
I loved my stay in this hotel from start to finish, I cannot recommend it highly enough, and were I to ever to return to Hanoi, the Sofitel would be my first port of call.

Room Tip: Ensure to ask for a room overlooking West / Truc Bach Lake - these have vastly superior views than o...

check in staff do not know about hotel promotion, we booked our stay with massage promotion for 2 person per day. check in staff insist no such promotion, then manager assisted with our check in, but now its 1 message per stay not 1 massage per day for 2 people. had to show them their own website for their promotion.

gym need serious overhaul, smell very bad and equipment are very old. staff not cleanning equipment, smells like very old gym.

wet area ok, but no mention of being coed or communal between male and female.

rooms are well maintain but price too expensive. intercontinental west lake newer hotel 2 kilometer away is cheaper and cleaner.
